Covid Cases at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

Recommended Posts

Apparently Neisi Dajomes :ECU (weightlifting) has had mixed covid test results while training in Spain. They will do final testing tomorrow to see what is the true result but she will not arrive to Tokyo for the opening ceremony (she's flag bearer)...

2 members of our Athletics team, which is actually training and preparing at the training camp in the city of Urayasu north of Tokyo, had to go to the mandatory 14-day quarantine.

This is due to the fact that they were identified as a possible close contact of one infected person on the plane that flew to Japan.

"It's nothing serious, it's just a precaution. Both quarantines are valid from the 17th and will last until July 30, "said the head of the Slovak athletics team at the Tokyo Olympics and SAZ chief coach Martin Pupiš, noting that the names of quarantined persons cannot be disclosed without their consent as part of personal data protection. "Quarantine measures apply to both of them - they must be completely self-isolated from others, they must not meet anyone, but they can continue to train when the other members of the team are not in the stadium. Also, given that both people have been vaccinated and have had six negative PCR tests in a short time, the measures are more lenient. "

The management of our athletics part was informed that two of its members were possible close contact of one infected person travelling by same plane, from the "covid" office of the management of the city of Urayasu, also the management of the entire Slovak Olympic team in the Olympic village in Tokyo was also informed about the situation.

Haven’t seen any names reported yet.

Hopefully they are not again from the :CZE team from the "famous covid flight" from which we already have 4 positive cases :wall:

We all knew this was going to happen, people shouldn't act so surprised :d Very unfortunate for the affected athletes, but there was/is always a risk in the current situation.

We're not surprised, but it's always going to be a matter of 'shit, not athlete X', 'ah crap, not him/her!' :p

Tell me about that.... You know, the doctor who is patient 0 in our team said he refused the vaccine and that he uses MOUTH WASH several times a day to get rid of viruses and it should prevent spreading covid ???

Partially ok. But you are god damn going to be the official tennis players doc at the Olympic and you behave like a jerk .....

    • Weightlifting formula is more or less similar to 2020 which was considered terrible by everybody!    this is a tough sport, you can't be in your best shape for too many events. there will be risks of serious injuries this way. with these rules you need 5 good results to qualify. if you bomb out in an event to score a zero you are out of the Olympics unless you replace it with another event. which means most of these poor guys have to participate in 7-8 events (and not just 5) to make up for possible bomb outs.    most importantly if you get injured anytime during this period (almost 2 years) you are out of the Olympics! that's how Sohrab Moradi missed the Tokyo Olympics despite breaking the WR during the qualification period. you can miss the Olympics in 2028 if you get injured late 2026 !  Karlos Nasar couldn't win the Olympic title if we had these rules in 2024   I understand 2024 qualification formula wasn't great either, it had its own flaws but this one is much worse for threatening athletes' health.
