  6. Discover the Arrival Madonna di San Luca (BO) As a traditional religious object of cult linked to the devotion of the image of the Blessed Virgin of St. Luca as well as comforting visual landmark for the Bolognese returning home, the sanctuary located on the Colle della Guardia is one of the symbols of the city itself. Measuring 3,796 meters in length, the portico that links the Sanctuary and the town is the longest in the world. Since 1433, this portico has been providing shelter for the annual procession which carries the Byzantine Madonna and Child to the cathedral in town during Ascension week. The construction of the portico began in 1674 with the Bonaccorsi arch by Gian Giacomo Monti at the old gate of Porta Saragozza. One can begin the walk up to the Sanctuary of the Madonna of San Luca at the Meloncello Arch situated along via Saragozza. The Sanctuary of Madonna di San Lucastanding today was built by Carlo Francesco Dotti between 1723 and 1757, as a replacement for the previous 15th century church. Among the artists whose works decorate the church are Guido Reni, Donato Creti, Giuseppe Mazza, and Guercino.
  7. Discover the Departure Bologna A natural crossroads in Italy and Europe, Bologna is rich in tradition, art, culture and food. An ancient University seat, the city beats at the heart of Italy under the shade of its famous towers, preserving the charm of its Medieval centre recognised by UNESCO as the largest and best preserved in the world with its 40 km of porticoes and over 50 museums. It is located in the Motor Valley, the location of Ducati, Lamborghini and the Imola racing circuit and, in 2006, it was declared by UNESCO “Creative City of Music” thanks to its musical excellence in the past and the wealth of current musicians. Gastronomy Bologna is the capital of good food par excellence: its fame started in Medieval university colleges and grew through trade in the modern age. Nowadays, strolling around the city’s alleyways, we breathe in the same cheerful atmosphere of the taverns of the past that safeguard the city’s culinary secrets. Markets and festivals also pass on traditional recipes because the culture of eating well has always been a distinctive trait of Bologna and its friendly inhabitants who love the pleasures of the table. Here are a few typical dishes: tagliatelle with Bolognaise ragù, tortellini, lasagne, mixed fried platter Bologna-style, breaded cutlet Bologna-style, rice tart. Places of Interest The journey to discover Bologna starts in Piazza Maggiore, the historic soul of the city overlooked by ancient buildings such as Palazzo Re Enzo, Palazzo dei Notai and Palazzo d’Accursio. The fountain of Neptune dominates the square of the same name. It is a monumental piece of work by sculptor Giambologna and rises majestically opposite Sala Borsa, a building that encompasses the ruins of the Roman city. The historic Palazzo dell’Archiginnasio definitely deserves a visit, home to the Anatomical Theatre, the original location of the oldest University in the West founded in 1088, as well as the Basilica of San Petronio, which houses the biggest sundial in the world. On strolling around the porticoes and squares, you come across the two famous Towers: the Asinelli tower soars upward together with the Garisenda tower from which the main streets radiate.
  8. Stage 1 Bologna > Madonna di San Luca (ITT) The ITT starts with 6 flat kilometres on broad, mostly straight urban boulevards, and ends with a steep 2 km climb to the Sanctuary of San Luca. Final kilometres The closing phases of the stage are very demanding: 2,100 metres before the finish, the route takes a sharp U-turn to the right, and the climb to San Luca begins. The climb alternates sharp ramps (up to 16%) and short lengths with 8-9% gradients. The roadway is narrowed and runs along an arcade, climbing all the way to the sanctuary. The road reaches the maximum gradient after the first pass under the cloister, by a double curve (“le Orfanelle”). The home straight is short (90 m), and the finish line sits on 5 m tarmac.
