This Shia-Sunni thing is mostly made by western media. I never fell such enmity at all just because of that. and beside that the majority of people in Iraq are Shia.

the problem is that city of Basra was invaded by Iran not long ago. it's like Iraq playing in Khorramshahr, or Ghasre-Shirin or Sardasht. (where Saddam's army invaded and killed hundreds of people) of course people won't forget these things easily.

of course after something like 30 years, there is no hatred in general , no at all . something like a million Iranians are already in Iraq for a religious thing these days but people who live in those cities directly involved in the war and lost their family still very well remember that. specially nowadays Iran isn't that popular in Iraq because of meddling in their local businesses.

Shocking defeat in Bahrain and our World Cup chance is already in jeopardy ! Bahrain was almost the worst place in the earth for Iran to play a football match, we never beat them away but still a defeat was unexpected. they got a penalty by our stupid mistake and since then they played "Bahrainian style" which means grass-rolling time wasting. dirty play .

I’m very worried about our next crucial game in Basra against Iraq next month.  it will be in a very hostile environment. actually I'm also worried about the safety of our players, if we lose we are out. and it seems our "nice" coach doesn't know how to deal with small dirty Asian teams. I already miss Queiroz.

it's not really necessarily about religion. if you ask what's it about ? I don't know. there are some stupid rules here nobody knows why.

technically it wasn't the first time. it happened before with limited number and under special situations.

but yes that, (first time in football though)

That was a dive. it was justice missing that penalty
today we had seed 1 hosting seed 5 in each group. we had lots of "interesting" results because of that

14-0 is the worst result of Cambodia history and 3rd best result of Iran. also the 3rd time in history Iran scoring double digit.

but this match was special for another reason, (anybody who doesn't know just google Iran Cambodia) probably that was the reason our players were motivated till the last minute and scored as many goal as possible.

it seems FIFA didn't approve Iraq to host its home matches, I read different news about it. first says they just can't host it in Basra, 2nd says they can't host at all and it seems Iraq Football federation threatened to withdraw. this is kind of interesting because right now Iraq is hosting the West Asian Championship !!

personally I believe Iraq deserves to host if they can guarantee safety. I just don't think Iran playing in Basra is a good idea. they can play anywhere in Iraq, just not Basra. that will be dangerous for our players. Basra was battleground during the Iran-Iraq war not long ago.

yeah I know but the word Persia is confusing, as it confused some of you guys here already

Persia/Persian is the name for the country, the race and the language !!! but ironically the word "Persian" is not Persian . it's English and it probably comes from "Parsi" which is the old version of Farsi. we call the language "Farsi" and the race as just "Fars" and as I said the name Persia for the country is a bit problematic. other races here don't prefer to use that word for the whole country. for example when they picked the slogan "Princes of Persia" for our football NT for one of the World Cups (2014 if I'm not wrong), some people here didn't like it AT ALL.

PS: by using an example from previous World Cups I just tried to make it a bit on-topic

Farsi = Persian . this is amazing people don't know that. Farsi is the Persian word for "Persian" in Iran ! we don't use the word Persian or Persia in Iran, in Kabul they call it something else but it's exactly the same. there are other languages in Afghanistan too. same as Iran, half of Iran population speak a second language (Turkish/Azeri, Arabic, Kurdish, Turkmen, etc)

of course there are small differences, some common words in Iran are different in Afghanistan. (and Tajikistan, they also speak Persian)

we got "lucky" once again in the draw. we got Iraq (the best team in pot 2) and Bahrain (best team in pot 3), only Hong Kong and Cambodia are easy. we could get Kuwait for example.

Iraq is always the toughest opponent for Iran , they play against Iran like their lives are depend on that. and Bahrain !? our worst football memory came from Bahrain.and the last time we played in Manama it was hostile situation and we only survived by a last minute goal . our new coach will be tested very soon , this first round won't be easy for Iran. have to be careful.

I was in terrible mood in past few days but watching MH Mohammadian today really cheered me up. he destroyed everybody today including the Olympic Champion, World U23 Champion, European Silver medalist, World Bronze medalist and another guy who finished 5th in Worlds this year. Mohammadian destroyed all of them without giving up a single point. it seems we have a medal favorite in Tokyo at this weight finally. and I don't think Sadulaev is a sure gold medal winner anymore from what we saw today this Mohammadian isn't completely without a chance against the Russian tank.

Amir Hossein Zare also won the gold but the field was much weaker at 125kg. he had one tough match against the biggest guy he will ever wrestle Bilyal Makhov ! that was a tough match, Zare won 5-3. he is just 19 and he is already beating multiple World Champions.

if both Zare and Mohammadian make the Olympics team, consider we also have the great Yazdani at 86kg. all of a sudden our freestyle team is not that weak anymore !

Poor Slovenia, the stupid system in basketball will give them a big chance to go to the Olympics even if they didn't bother qualifying for the World Cup. And the European title won in 2017 won't qualify them to the Olympics that are held three years later, what a scandal. Something similar is happening for Italy, that won't be in Tokyo despite winning the 1999 Eurobasket.

Good job by our Wrestler Abdellatif Mohamed as he won gold in men's -130 kg he defeated Asian Games Champions in quarters by fall,  this guy is keeping on improving and maybe with a good draw he can be a contender for a medal in Tokyo

Ah ok, sorry my bad, so it´s actually really weird then. I obviously did some googling and find this article from 7th June 2007 Russian Olympic champion from Sydney want compete for Slovakia https://www.olympic.sk/clanok/rusky-olympijsky-vitaz-v-zapaseni-zo-sydney-david-musulbes-chce-reprezentovat-slovensko

Kertanti explaining that yes Musulbes was at that time coach of RUS team but still wanted to wrestle, the Russian authorities denied him this chance saying he is too old, apparently also Georgia was offering him the citzenship but his friendship with Kertanti prevailed and he choosed Slovakia

Actually yes, from what I read he was resident in Volgograd and came to Slovakia only few days per year, mostly during the competitions like national championships or promo actions etc..

I can´t say about all, I definitely doubt they are really connected with Slovakia, but 3 of the guys are actually for sure Taimuraz Salkazanov, Akhsarbek Gulaev and Boris Makoev are all quite connected with the country, the first two are living here for a long while now, they even competed in the juniors categories for our colours. Taimuraz is speaking a very nice and clean fluent slovak, same for Gulaev, Makoev is at least also trying to speak in slovak with our journalists too but he has to use sometimes russian or english words

actually that was early 2008 (not 2007) of course you can't switch just before the Olympics, you have to do it before the Olympic qualifiers to qualify first I still think he didn't spent more than week in Slovakia before Beijing 2008.

if I'm not wrong Musulbes had retired and was coaching, he just came back for the Olympics. and who knows he most probably could win the gold if it wasn't for cheater Taymazov.

that was interesting to know the connection between him and Slovakia. that was too easy and I remember Kertanti as wrestler, (and yes I know he is Russian too) also Lohyna. I think I remember one more Slovakian freestyle wrestler but can't recall the name. (had to google to remember, Stefan Fernyak)

I remember him qualifying for the games in spring 2007 winning the European championship, so yes at least 1 year before the games he was already competing for Slovakia

Actually I also remember the story, because it was shown in our TV when he won that Bejing medal, it was the NT coach at that time Rodion Kertanti who called him (as good friends) because he knew that David wanted to win one more Olymic gold before retiring and Russia apparently denied him the chance saying he is too old and they are focusing on some younger guys or so..so in 2006 if I´m not wrong Rodion asked him if he don´t want to try it in SVK colors, he said yes ad the rest you know

I didn't follow one single Karate PL event and they did this ! winning 5 gold and 1 bronze with only 8 athletes is quite an achievement even though it wasn't the highest level of the competition.

but I still can't understand why they had to send Askari, Poursheib and Ganjzadeh halfway the world for this ?! they are very safe for the quota. no idea how coach wants to solve Ganjzadeh/Poursheib question though. maybe just sending both of them everywhere to see which one will have more points at the end !

but on the women's side, they needed all those points, Rozy Alipour and Abbasali put themselves in a better position with those gold medals.

I have to reject two of your reasons

    1) there was no immediate claim, no official statement from the Iranian authorities yet, they only say they are sure it wasn't a missile and they invite all other countries to investigate the accident. nothing more. this is how things work in Iran, when something happens, a guy says something about it, then another guy (totally unrelated to the case) says something else and I saw most of the time western media publish those things as official.

    2) that's pretty normal, the site of accident is responsible for the investigation and Boeing is an American company, they simply don't trust Americans.

    3) but this one is a valid reason. Iran was ready for an air strike at the time, they were ready to shot down anything suspicious so it's hard to believe it's just a coincidence. the place also makes sense it wasn't that far from a military base.

but then Iranians sound very confident by letting everybody investigate the accident. a big group of Ukrainian experts are already there and there are other groups on their way from Canada and France.

And this is also weird that a guy was randomly filming the sky at 6 in the morning in a place  has no people !? and few hours out of the city

and it seems that wasn't just a simple plane crash. apparently it was shot down by accident. even though Iran denies it and invites everybody involved to investigate the accident  and I personally don't believe anything coming from the USA under this administration but there are signs making me believe the theory.

reading stories about the passengers, it's really tragic, most of them were highly educated. mostly Iranian-Canadian or Iranians living/studying in Canada came to their home country for their holidays there were at least 3 couples coming back home just for their wedding

this is one of the victims, his latest tweet few minutes before the accident, he is actually making a joke about his possible death

I have lots of friends, former classmates and even close relatives (aunt, cousin etc) living in Canada and when I was reading the list I was afraid to see a familiar name and I did, my classmate and actually my closest friend in my MS studies were there. I wasn't in contact with him for couple years, didn't know he was even married ...
