  1. CAN vs USA FIN vs RUS Pretty good rivalries in the semi-final.
  2. Yes, not wanting to search through Japanese sites I found this article. It doesn't clearly explain why, but at least Yoshimura will compete in the team event
  3. I imagine that there must have been some kind of internal qualification among eligible athletes.
  4. To keep things correct China has declined its men’s (Fan Zhendong) and women’s (Liu Shiwen) singles quotas obtained from the world rankings it has been reallocated to China’s Xu Xin and China’s Ding Ning respectively. Oddly enough China did not accept the quotas. Similarly Japan declined its men’s singles (Maharu Yoshimura) quota causing it to reallocated back to Japan’s Koki Niwa. Japan has accepted the quota. Overall China and South Korea have yet to accept their quotas.
  5. Unless they pass the A or B standards (and get chosen by FINA) the selection will be between two female swimmers since they're the only ones that competed at the 2015 Aquatic Championships which is a requirement for a universality spot.
  6. I'm happy for Alex Rose, I thought his chances were over when Dodson qualified in the 200m. He's won multiple medals for Samoa at the Oceania Championships and Pacific Games. He also reached the final in the Universiade Games.
  7. The top 4 boxers in each weight class will qualify, the world championship has priority so if an athlete has already qualified through the continental tournament the quota will be reallocated to the next best nation from the continental tournament.
  8. It's pretty amazing that the same teams keep getting relegated right after they are promoted. The last team to avoid that fate was France in 2008 (Though Germany was lucky in 2009 since they hosted in 2010).
  9. The European swimming championships have begun. Besides being a good event to push people to reach the A standard it is the event where some nations will finalize their team. For Denmark, Netherlands and Spain this will be the final opportunity for their athletes to qualify while for Russia this is the event for athletes given a second opportunity to be added to the team. For Italy this is the second event (out of 3) where athletes can qualify to the Olympic team.
  10. With one more event to go I decided to take a look at the potential wild card selections. Judo has 20 tripartite quotas in total. Currently 32 nations have at least one athlete with points that do not have an athlete qualified either through the world rankings or continental rankings. I have constructed a list of those nations along with the event which they have the most points in. As a reminder having a ranking is not necessary to be given a tripartite quota. There were multiple athletes in 2012 where they did not have a ranking, but were given a quota. 1. – Men’s -81kg – 541 pts 2. – Men’s -60kg – 233 pts 3. – Women’s -63kg – 133 pts 4. – Men’s -60kg – 125 pts 5. – Women’s -57kg – 67 pts 6. – Men’s -66kg – 56 pts 7. – Men’s -81kg – 52 pts 8. – Men’s -100kg – 52 pts 9. – Men’s -60kg – 50 pts 10. – Men’s -66kg – 48 pts 11. – Men’s -66kg – 48 pts 12. – Men’s -66kg – 48 pts 13. – Men’s -73kg – 44 pts 14. – Men’s -60kg – 30 pts 15. – Men’s +100kg – 19 pts 16. – Women’s -52kg – 13 pts 17. – Men’s -100kg – 8 pts 18. – Men’s -60kg – 6 pts 19. – Women’s -63kg – 6 pts 20. – Men’s -60kg – 6 pts 21. – Men’s -60kg – 6 pts 22. – Men’s -60kg – 4 pts 23. – Women’s -63kg – 4 pts 24. – Men’s -73kg – 4 pts 25. – Men’s -90kg – 3 pts 26. – Men’s -60kg – 2 pts 27. – Women’s -63kg – 2 pts 28. – Men’s -90kg – 2 pts 29. – Men’s -66kg – 2 pts 30. – Women’s -63kg – 2 pts 31. – Women’s -70kg – 1 pt 32. – Men’s -81kg – 1 pt
  11. Do you think there will be enough re-allocations that nations with only 1 MQS qualify?
  12. She wouldn't be eligible for a wild card since Hungary qualifies many athletes. There isn't too much competition for the wild cards anyway. Only Sri Lanka, Zambia, Ghana and Jordan have athletes in the top 300 with only Sri Lanka in the top 200 (and they have a good chance at getting a men's spot too). It is quite believable that at least two spots weren't allocated to tripartite nations. In 2012 none of the female tripartite quotas were given out.
  13. If two tripartite spots are returned then she would get one (along with Estonia) if my counting is correct.
  14. Update (Remove) Men's 110m Hurdles (Athletics)
  15. ISAF updated its qualification list a few days ago. New Zealand has declined its quota in the men's RS:X (we already knew that) and women's RS:X while Australia declined its quota for the women's RS:X. No replacement has been listed though it should go to the next highest ranked eligible boat from the 2015 World Championship of that boat class.
  16. It has been a disappointing two years for Canada, I thought they could have a very outside chance at winning a medal. We essentially switched places with the United States. Fiji just needs to reach the quarter-finals in order to win the title. I hope they can translate this to their first Olympic medal.
  17. Considering most nations use the format of the first three letters of their name as their code I would say it's intuitive. One of the biggest reasons why a nation doesn't use their first three letters is because a different nation already has it.
  18. Maybe it was a mistake. If Slovenia didn't exist I would also write Slovakia as SLO since it's intuitive.
  19. I think that was done a while ago. It may be possible that Morocco wanted a different athlete to compete in the event (possibly someone from the WSB/APB)
  20. You will be given a third (he can only compete in the team event).
  21. It was already a bit of a scandal before that ranging from T&T changing their selection criteria to give Dick a chance at competing at the test event to topless pictures of both athletes
  22. If you like selection soap operas you should read up on Trinidad and Tobago's gymnastics selection. It essentially divided a nation.
  23. It looks like the IAAF said a suspension won't be likely link
  24. Are they allowed to go back that far? I though it was just parents and grandparents.
  25. I wonder whether Australia put pressure on him to do so.
