Josh reacted to heywoodu in Women's Football FIFA World Cup 2023
Not exactly a 'calm' run-up to the championships for Zambia. First the thing about captain Barbra Banda, who last year 'failed' a gender test (in so far one can 'fail' that, since it's not a performance), but will be allowed to play anyone since that decision is up to the national federations for whatever reason, and significantly worse: now the national team coach Bruce Mwape has been accused of rather serious behaviour. According to an anonymous player in the team: "If you wanted to keep your play in the selection, you had to have sex with the coach if he wished so."
So yeah. Stuff is going on there.

I especially like Hannah Ohrtmann and Lisa Alsmeier. Germany really became stronger last year. Interesting to see if they can qualify for Paris with competition from Dominican Republic, Canada and Netherlands.
Serbia played the first two weeks with their B-squad. But Ojgenovic and the legend Boskovic came back in the third week. But Serbia was still a little shaky.

Josh reacted to Makedonas in Rowing WR World Cup 2023
Anastasiadou/Bourmpou will represent Greece in the women's pair at the upcoming World Cup.
Anastasiadou is only 21 yo yet has competed in W1X, LW1X, W2X, LW2X and now W2-
She usually wins medals when she shows up to international regattas, but it would really be nice if she can just find one boat/crew and stick to it.
There was also a ton of drama (which I won't bore everyone with) with the Kyridou sisters not getting selected for this event...

Josh reacted to Makedonas in Rowing WR World Cup 2023
Well, they are in the A Final so it seems like they will be the crew we send to Paris.
I guess the Kyridou sisters can try to qualify in the double sculls or maybe in the four with two other athletes.
Of the 5 boats we sent to Lucerne, 4 are in the A Finals (M1X, LM2X, W2-, LW2X). It seems like we should expect those boats to all qualify for Paris. The one boat that didn't make it was the M2X. They were in the A Final of the World Championships last year, and one of the two rowers was injured since then and is just coming back, so hopefully they just need more time to get back to a high level.

Josh reacted to CCB in Rowing WR World Cup 2023
The Dutch federation wants fewer medals, but to increase the chance of more first places. That's why we now only have competitive boats in the W1x, W4x, M2x, M4x and M8. In my opinion a wrong choice, because in these five boats there are so many other top countries that you better participate in more boats and then settle for bronze or something. In the W1x Karolien Florijn is the reigning world champion, but the Australian Tara Rigney has almost passed her. The W4x is for China, the M2x for the Sinkovic brothers, the M4x for GB and the M8 too. So anyway a lot of silver and bronze for the Netherlands. I'd rather have 8x silver and bronze than 5x silver and bronze. I really don't understand the choice for these priority boats.

There is a cautious all-clear. An ultrasound examination did not reveal a tear in the thigh. It could have just been a hardening.

The highlight of Day 2 of the Greek Nationals was Tentoglou's 8.38 EL, which gave him the Olympic qualification. Still, he seemed disappointed because he wanted a bigger jump. There was a decent crowd to watch him though:
Also in the men's long jump, 20 yo Stamatonikolos won silver with a PB of 7.86, and 19 yo Chitas was 4th with a PB of 7.50.
The other big star of the day was Stefanidi, who won gold with a SB of 4.61. Polak (4.46) and Kyriakopoulou (4.35) were the other medalists, each with SBs as well. They both got important points for Budapest and will hope to repeat that at the Balkan Championships.
Kyriazis won the men's javelin with 79.61, and Scarvelis won the women's hammer with 68.83. Both got important ranking points as they try to make it to Budapest. Same with Gnafaki who won the women's 400 hurdles with 56.69.
The men's high jump saw Merlos and 18 yo Mita each with 2.19. For Mita, it was a new PB.
In the women's long jump, the top 6 all finished above 6m (which is very good for our standards), and the winner was Koreneva with 6.43. Unfortunately, she is still waiting for Greek citizenship despite living here for many years and being married to a Greek.

(s)he was already in Doha's world final, but it looks it was a lot of time ago (and she/he wasn't good enough for the medals, so there was no attention as it will happen this year)
however, shitstorm coming in 3, 2, 1...
