Fencing EFC European Olympic Games Qualifier 2021

If the IOC was willing to accept additional quotas, then they could use a modified version of the PanamSports model. 16 fencers from teams (2 from each), and then 16 individual fencers per event. That would be a reduction of 2 quotas per individual event, but you’d actually end up with more countries competing, and possibly better individual competitions.

The problem is not the number of individuals competing in the individual event. It's a pure total athlete quota issue.

What's the point of not allowing an athlete that is already present and counted in the athlete quota from competing? This isn't table tennis where they only allow two singles competitors to try to limit how many medals China wins (a stupid and short-sighted idea, they should really let every team members enter the singles event). Holding an individual event with 34 competitors isn't all that different logistically from holding an individual event with 48 competitors.

What fencing really needs is the IOC to give it 36 extra quotas so they can have 8 teams per event and individual events that have 16 dedicated qualifiers rather than 10.

I honestly believe that with this idiotic quota reduction it´s time for team competitions to abandon the program.

When you actually see that between 5-8 fencers in each weapon and gender will only be in Tokyo because they´re needed to fill a quota for a team (the one's with continental / host  places in particular), and some very competent individuals being left out because of that ridiculous 8 team "competition", then you should left space for more countries to send their best, respecting the 3 per country for those powerhouses that can actually qualify them.

The team events in fencing aren't some add-on. It's a core part of how fencers compete from the lowest level to the very top level. Even when I did fencing recreationally we did team tournaments almost as often as we did individual ones.

The format at the Olympics is more than fine given the quotas Fencing has available. The calibre of competition at the Olympics in the team events is usually pretty strong, even though obviously some medal contenders are missing.

So not exactly the best for the major sporting event, unless they add some places right?

It would be better with 12 teams. But a lot of summer Olympic events could use more competitors.

I'm of the opinion that all Olympic events should have at least 12 entrants (especially if you are going to give continental quotas). If the quality of the field isn't strong enough to justify this then it shouldn't be in the Olympics.

Fencing team events have enough depth to justify 12 entrants.

Your favourites for today's Men's Epee? 24 entrants is quite high number but no wonder for Epee. Seed no. 1 :ESP Perreira, No. 2 :FIN Vuorinen, No. 3 :AUT Mahringer, No. 4 :CZE Jurka, No.5 :DEN Von der Osten.  ..... Means 5 great fencers from Top 50 haven't qualified for the Olympics and there is only one spot. It is going to be an extremely tough competition. For me, hoping that :CZE Jurka will take the spot. With all of his achievements in junior level, he definitely deserves. Wish all the best to him!

You forgot about Zawrotniak (#14) and Freilich (#19). There are 7 fencers in top 50 and only one will win OQ :(

Who lost against Czech Jurka in semifinal...

This big dissapointed which always happen for us the Games already started this time, even 3 months before Olympics. Maybe I bit overreacted for all of these our loses in most of sports but there is no arguments that we can have good Olympics, reaching even 11 medals will be now difficult.

    • Canoe Sprint There is a now a cap of 5 athletes per gender in the kayak events (down from 6 in 2024). The World Championships has been replaced by the Olympic Qualification Rankings.   K2 lost 2 boat quotas while K4 has gained 1 boat quota. Quota distribution is quite complicated as it usually is for canoe sprint. They also force nations to compete in a minimum number of events based on the number of athletes qualified; 2 and 3 athletes per boat class must compete in 2 events, 4 must compete in all 3 events and 5 must compete in all 3 events and have two entries in the K1 event.
    • Wrestling will have a completely new format, I do not like the changes. ranking isn't really a good idea in this sport, this will force wrestlers to compete in so many events to collect points. which is not good for their health. specially with the current UWW ranking points distribution system which is plain stupid   they are also gifting 18 quotas to very weak countries by that last qualification event. but I understand their point of view. can't wait to see lots of Russian wrestlers compete for weak countries for that 1 available quota.
    • Canoe Slalom Quotas from men's/women's K1 have been moved to men's/women's KX1. K1 will now have 14 quotas while KX1 will have 10 quotas. C1 remains at 17 quotas. Athletes may participate in other events up to a maximum of 2 athletes per NOC.   The World Championship qualifier has been dropped in favour of the Olympic Qualification Rankings (7 K1, 10 C1, 3 KX1), afterwards you have the Continental Qualifiers (1 per boat) and then a new Global Qualifier (2 per boat).   There were a few changes regarding ways to ensure an athlete can only obtain 1 quota. The biggest being at each stage the boat priority is K1 > KX1 > C1 for the rankings and KX1 > K1 > C1 for the continental/global qualifiers. This basically means if the same athlete qualifiers in multiple boats then the quota will be given to the kayak over canoe.
    • I'll post significant changes periodically. I'll start with the recently added/updated documents.   Archery The addition of mixed compound (12M & 12W) forced a reduction on the recurve side. The mixed compound quotas are distributed as follows   Host - 1 World Championships - 3 Continental Games - 5 World Ranking List - 2 Final Qualifier - 1   To compensate the team events will now only have 8 nations. 2 quotas were removed from the World Ranking List and 2 were removed from the Final Qualifier.   Individual recurve and mixed recurve distribution is the same
    • In Rome, it would be useful to roof the swimming pool complex at Foro Italico, possibly with the option of retracting the roof and covering the tennis court complex. Overall, there's a lot to do, for example, compared to Budapest, but unfortunately, this is Italy How many years has Roma been building their new stadium, and they keep pushing back the completion date- now I read it's 2030? and it should be ready. The same goes for Milan- there should be a modern complex of indoor swimming pools with 50 meters pools, etc., but there's a problem with one stupid football stadium, which will only be built after an ultimatum from UEFA
