Athletics Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

Recommended Posts

Alexis Copello of Azerbaijan is out of the men's triple jump. Not surprising as he hasn't competed at all during this outdoor season. Neither has the other Azeri, Nazim Babayev. I wonder if he'll withdraw.

Tsiamis now moves up to 33rd. I don't wish injury on anyone but it would be really nice if Tsiamis gets in. He certainly would've made it but DNS in the final of the Greek national championships (after jumping in qualifying) and then was going to go to the Balkan Championships but withdrew a few days prior. Both events would've given him easy ranking points to go to Tokyo. Then you have the three miracle men (one from Uzbekistan, one Armenia, and one Georgia) who all qualified in this event despite never jumping anywhere near the standard unless they are in their home countries. World Athletics really needs to do something about this problem.

Tsiamis really should be in Tokyo, would be such a shame for him to miss out...

Some Swiss girl is out of heptathlon and ?? Adrianna Sułek is in. She posted about rellocation on her insta.

I am unashamed, at getting nothing done.

with all respect to the polish girl but wish the girl from Trinidad and Tobago got that quota instead as she surely would be very competitive for a medal or top 5

This ranking in heptathlon was bizzard. Sulek and girl from Trynidad was so close qualify thanks to standard, girl from Uzbekistan has good ranking thanks to Asian Champs.

If the Trinidad girl was as good as she says she is, then she would have qualified outright.

Indeed. It was a tough standard but 11 got it while she’s talking about being denied a medal by the rules

Yeah, most combined event athletes save themselves for the Olympics anyway, so claiming you are a medal contender by virtue of having 7th best season's result pre-Olympics is only telling half a story.

:CUB triple jumper Diaz Fortun removed from the national team for Tokyo as he refused to participate in some European meetings. I suppose it gives quota to :GRE Tsiamis and :SVK Veszelka moves to the first position below the line...

    • pdr4332   Explain to me what this Ukraine thing is all about? Isn't this just another Orban tactic to focus on this before the elections, instead of discussing, for example, the fact that during the 16 years of VO's rule in Budapest, Hungary's GDP has fallen from the level of Poland/Czech Republic in 2010 to under Romania's? Does anyone in Hungary still fall for this, because it seems like something like this happens every 4 years: Soros, Brussels, now Ukraine and who will be next

    • I remember when Ferrari dominated inFormula 1 in the early 21st century, the rules were deliberately changed to limit their advantage. Something similar recently happened with Mercedes' dominance after 2020. And here we have a situation where Norway is favored, if the Finns are telling the truth and that's strange – should the richest federation get some extra advantage from FIS? It's certainly better for the popularity of a given discipline to have a more diverse nations on the front, than to have 3 Norwegians skiers at the front with the rest of the world 2 minutes behind. But maybe that will change, because Norway isn't as dominant in the women's competitions without Bjoergen and Johaug. I think the situation will change somewhat after Klaebo's career, even without Rus's return. Without Klaebo, Norway would not have won the entire gold medal here: in the sprint it would have been Ogden from the USA, and in the combined race: Frenchman Desloges.   Of course, the stars like Klaebo and Phelps build the popularity of a their disciplines, but it always takes some kind of great rivalry- a great rival- for people to really take an interest that. For example, in Beijing, Phelps won 8 gold medals, but in the 100 butterfly, there was fierce competition and controversy with battle against Milorad Cavic. In Klaebo's case, this hasn't been that`s case since Bolshunov's exclusion and that certainly has some impact on the overall situation.
