Athletics Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

So each country according to the IOC must send at least one female athlete (I am sure they do not care if its just females), so what will they do for the nations with just a male athlete awarded in athletics? For ex. Tuvalu? I don't think they have any athlete capable in any other sport.

What makes you think the IOC thought this through?

(My guess is that they will do special IOC invitations like they did for Saudi Arabia in 2012)

So much for their quota limit!! Every part of Agenda 2020 being refuted. What a failure.

The quota limit hurts mid-small size nations anyway. Based on the athlete attendance in the 80s and 90s we should have around 11,500-12,000 athletes with the increased amount of events.

Very true. Speaking on behalf of Greece (I would say we are a mid size nation), we are way better in athletics now than we were in 2012 or 2016, but we will have less athletes because of these quota limits and high entry standards.

Question for experts.

How many RUS athlets can make realistically the team in M Hammer Throw, there 3 RUS & 1 ANA athlete in the world ranking qualifying places right now, but I assume only the ANA guy can theoretically compete in Tokyo, pending he will be chosen as one of the 10 ANA athletes ?

There are 3 Russian's and an ANA listed as qualified in the Women's 3000m SC. Surely this cannot be accurate?

    • Yes agreed, resetting it would help make it more dramatic as no one would be running away with it. We could also set it that there is a small reward for ranking higher after each round… maybe they start the next round with a “head start” so they bring a few points into the next round? But starting from scratch each round might be cleaner
    • I like the concept a lot. My only worry would be that the nations doing the best individually would also end up at the top here as teams are only made up of pairs. Whereas in a bigger team it gives the nations not doing so well individually to have another chance if they are lucky enough to be placed in a good team. Any way we can balance it?

    • Nice for them, but also kind of too bad they pick the exact same two as last time. Would have been nice to see Regina Martinez for example (although I'm not sure that would have been logistically possible, depending on how they're going to do the flag bearer thing in the first place).

    • For me 20 medals will be good. And if more there are? Super. However, I prefer not to get my hopes up too much, so as not to be disappointed later.
    • If you're still taking suggestions, I tought the following:   Team Madison format.   17 teams of 2 "riders", randomly drawn. Teams can be named for famous "endurance" track cyclists. 4 intermediate "sprints", one after a voting block, in which the top 8 teams will score according to this formula: (10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 & 1). The order in which team score for a sprint are determined by the total number of "medals" won by both members of the team during the block. Ranking will be sorted according to the number of gold medals, then silver, then bronze. If there's two or more teams with same number of points, the medals of best individual performer of each team will be considered to break the tie. If the tie remains, then team's total points during the block will be used to break it. If the team fails to receive a single medal during each block, it will be considered to "lose lap" and 20 points will be substracted from their score. If the team fails to score at least 1 point during each block, it will be an automatic DNF for the team. If both members of the team get a medal from a single jury, it will be considered to "gain lap" and 20 points will be added to their score. A team can only win an additional lap per voting block. After the 4 intermediate, a "final" sprint will be recorded, in which points will be doubled (20, 16, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4 & 2). Ranking for the final sprint will take into account the total medals won during the event.   What do you think?
