It’s not necessary about the technology in this case. I read an interview Coe gave a while back, and he said the additional time was likely the culprit for why so many athletes are reaching the standards. World Athletics only intended for about 50% of entries for each event to reach the standard, but with effectively two full seasons to qualify, more athletes have been able to do so. That was his two cents on the topic anyway.

I think he is partially right. the entry standards in athletics are really hard, but the long qualification contributes to the fact so many athletes achieve it.

The other part no one wants to talk about: you could do a lot of things  unobserved ;) in 2020 and has nothing to do with new shoes

A large chunk of that extra time didn’t have any competition (times gained in a period of nearly 8 months weren’t counted) and it’s only at long distances really. The marathon is way over subscribed

It’s the shoes

It’s the shoes

It has been so blatantly obvious that the shoes are making insane differences in the past one or two years, yes :p

Just in the last two weeks alone we saw the women's 10k world record being broken by runners who seemed to be running relatively comfortably, whereas in the men's 5k we've seen someone gone from semi-alright continental level to absolute world class level (in terms of times) in two races. Those are not exceptions.

Yes. I should have said the shoes is the best case scenario

Some of the recent times have been absurd
