Athletics EAA Indoor European Championships 2021

Recommended Posts

:LTU Lithuania are sending 9 athletes to these championships:

Agnė Šerkšnienė - 400m (broke the Lithuanian indoor record earlier this month, could be someone to watch out for)

Modesta Justė Morauskaitė - 400m

Diana Zagainova - Triple Jump (hasn't jumped over 14m in a long while, not really expecting much)

Gediminas Truskauskas - 60m (semifinal at best)

Rapolas Saulius - 60m Hurdles (broke his PB and qualified in the Lithuanian Championships last week)

Simas Bertašius - 1500m (is a capable runner, could surprise with a final)

Adrijus Glebauskas - High Jump

also two other athletes were approved without a qualification mark:

Juozas Baikštys - High Jump

Jogailė Petrikaitė - Long Jump

for these two, it's going to be their first senior championship appearance, both have had loads of injuries along the way during their career, so it's nice to see them getting a chance to fight with the best). First senior championships appearance for Rapolas Saulius as well, he was a good junior, but his results were at a stalemate for the last couple of years, but he changed coaches and has been improving pretty decently.

:GRE  Team Greece  :GRE

20 Athletes (9 M + 11 W)

Men

  • Ioannis Nyfantopoulos (60m)
  • Konstantinos Zikos (60m)
  • Andreas Dimitrakis (1500m)
  • Konstantinos Douvalidis (60m Hurdles)
  • Konstantinos Filippidis (Pole Vault)
  • Alexandros Peristeris (Long Jump)
  • Miltiadis Tentoglou (Long Jump)
  • Nikolaos Andrikopoulos (Triple Jump)
  • Dimitrios Tsiamis (Triple Jump)

Women

  • Maria Gatou (60m)
  • Kiriaki Samani (60m)
  • Rafailia Spanoudaki (60m)
  • Irini Vasiliou (400m)
  • Konstantina Giannopoulou (800m)
  • Anastasia Marinakou (1500m)
  • Elisavet Pesiridou (60m Hurdles)
  • Ioanna Zakka (High Jump)
  • Eleni Polak (Pole Vault)
  • Spyridoula Karydi (Triple Jump)
  • Paraskevi Papachristou (Triple Jump)

I think our team is quite strong even though we are missing 5 other athletes that qualified, including a few who would've had good chances to win medals. Still, I think Tentoglou and Papachristou have very good chances to win medals and possibly even gold. Both are EL for this year and have been European champions in the past so that's why I say it.

I also think Polak has a chance to win a medal. Possibly Zikos or Spanoudaki could surprise too. Filippidis and Tsiamis have won European medals before but I don't think they have any chances based on current form. I think we can leave Torun with 2-3 medals and I would be happy with that.

Also disappointing to not have anyone in the men's high jump for Greece. We have two guys who won medals in this event at previous European Indoor Championships (Antonios Mastoras won silver in 2015 and Konstantinos Baniotis won silver in 2019). Mastoras hasn't competed since 2018 and Baniotis since 2020.

both 4*400m relays will have only the final, no preliminary round...only 6 teams per gender have been accepted by EAA  ;)

the women's relay will feature: POL, NED, ITA, UKR, GBR, GER

the men's relay field is: POL, BEL, GBR, ITA, NED, CZE

Italy will enter 44 athletes (22 women and 22 men) in this championship...

the stars are surely Gianmarco Tamberi (men's High Jump), Marcell Jacobs (men's 60m) and teenage sensation Larissa Iapichino (women's Long jump)...

Leonardo Fabbri (men's Shot Put), despite being in the start list, is not in good shape because he recently had covid and missed quite a long training period...

the rest of the field, frankly is just cosmetic...

the full Italian squad can be found here:

Elliot Giles 800m has withdrawn from the team

Too bad, but after his sensational run last week, he’s obviously got his eye on higher things.  Don’t think we’ll be seeing many star names overall - except :POL, who always put out their best for home events.  But it’s good to have an event which is mostly about the youngsters & Pavel Maslák.

    • fencingtv.com   now it's all there (needs registration, but for now it's free of charge, so it's still OK)
    • many athletes didn't get their visa 2  Schengen , canada , usa ...do it all the time  it's a new strategy to increase the chance of medals
    • Four  (Duguma, Berha, Kalayu, Siyoum) got denied visas even though they competed in Toruń in Febraury  Must be some Schengen visa rules crap?
    • Yep, I actually think this Schwaller team is only just getting better every single year, and there’s not many viable options at third and fourth in the Swiss women’s curling scene, there’s only some good but not great players.   If Paetz and Tirinzoni both retire before the next quadrennial (likely for Tirinzoni, she said at the end of last year that the recent GSOC event would be her last) then Berset-Witschonke-Howald-Hurlimann is the best you can do and I don’t think the firepower is there. If Paetz keeps going, and it’s Witschoke-Howald-Hurlimann-Paetz then it’ll be interesting, but it’s also hard to predict.
    • The Canucks have started their tank this season and now we’re awful, so I’ll only be watching when the playoffs start  at least we get a guaranteed top 3 pick, but even that probably won’t go our way.   Fencing WC’s are interesting yep, if I can find a stream and if our top fencers are competing or make it to the R16 or further.    Speaking of basketball, I forgot about NBA
    • because of schedule , after 1 month of fasting , Things could be better for africans 2 weeks later
    • Always a 6 week lull between the end of the full Winter Sports season and the Summer Sports season gets going in early May.  OK, there is stuff going on, but not three or four things a weekend.
