We were on the West but we couldn't as well travel to outside the country without permission (because everyone was against the colonial war, so many people tried and left Portugal to live in France). Also we had a truly machist regime: womens could not travel without her husband permission.

P.S - I really find this interesting (and sad..), having people from all different countries of the world, and it seems all our nations had similar experiences with dictactorships (of different styles, our was not communist but a far-right one) in the nearby past..... One can learn a lot here in this forum :)

Thanks god, now it´s only a history. Peoples has tendencies to insufficiently rate the freedom. we are very lucky to live in freedom

There a milion of vidoes or films from the communism era, you can easily find them. I´ll just put this 5 minute clip and one 3 minute video about some "the best-off" "hilarious" propaganda about USA with subtitles..

Well, Cuba was fighting the racist Apartheid Regime and the UNITA in Angola. Cuba also has a mucher higher standard of living than most other countries in Central America. Castro was fighting illiteracy and improved healthcare. Under his Leadership the lifes of most Cubans improved compared to the situation before he came to power. He was controversial for sure, but was not a bad leader overall.

That's why thousands of them risk their lifes in makeshift rafts to reach Florida and even Mexico.

Not to count those who literally escape every other sports competition.

And also those who escaped are now celebrating this news.

It's really hard to say what is true. Some say he was a dictator, horrible person and betrayer, while others see him as a saviour, redeemer, great leader (El Comadante).

Castro was neither a great leader, nor the big bad wolf. He was something in between, if you ask me.

The number of refugees from Cuba who are picked up by the US Coast Guard is actually low compared to those from Dominican Republic or Haiti. And that is despite the preferential treatment Cuban migrants get compared to others regarding permanent resident status.

You can look up the statistics about standard of living yourself. Just look at UN statistics, HDI etc.

My favourite part about Fidel was that spoof they did of him in Married with Children. :d The episode when Al's dodge was dying and the only way to save it was to get a fuel pump from Cuba.

    • For the summary and lowlights of Thailand's preparation in hosting the ongoing Sea Games, I kindly suggest those who are interested to read from this English language article from Thai media outlet, Thai Enquirer: https://www.thaienquirer.com/63469/thailands-sea-games-2025-under-fire-budget-management-and-technical-controversies/
    • It's all hogwash especially in the short attention span generation. Like nobody cares about Free Tibet anymore either. Free Palestine will last a lot longer due to Saudi Arabia becoming a sponsorship force in sports.   Israel is too weak in soccer to qualify from UEFA zone. The only time they qualified was from the Asian zone and they only beat Australia & New Zealand who were complete nobodies in the 1960s. No such luck in the 60 years since.
    • Oh I assure you FIFA dodger a bullet with Israel not qualifying…   But ya that’s kind of the thing, shut up and dribble is a mantra anti LGBT people have used often. I don’t think it’s hypocritical to remind them of their position
    • Ah, yes but that's not how pro athletes are taught in North America these days? Shut up & dribble is xenophobic, racist or whatever? The hypocrisy of some of these policies were exposed during 2022 World Cup already where the Saudis played it smart and waved their own "Free Palestine' slogans. Forget LGBT rights for a moment, how many 'Free Palestine' flags will be waved in 2026? Or will those be confiscated by default? Somehow I feel this won't be met with similar backlash when China clamped down on 'Free Tibet' in 2008 OG. Saudi Arabia is more important to global markets than Iran & Egypt
    • Wisła Płock just assumed 1st position after five consecutive draws. Must be first time ever a team on a five match winless streak actually moves up to league top.
    • Well ya, which is why the Egyptian and Iranian teams can shut up and dribble :P
    • The problem is, the World Cup is not a local event. Overall it's another storm in a teacup. LGBT rights in Muslim countries won't change a damn inch becuse of one soccer match in Seattle
    • After looking at the entry list of athletes in the official website, I've changed some of my predictions in the Olympic events with these changes:   Total Tally: Thailand 87, Singapore 51, Vietnam 48, Indonesia 33, Philippines 24, Malaysia 22, Cambodia 1     Badminton (5): Malaysia 2, Thailand 1, Singapore 1, Indonesia 1   Men’s Singles: Switched from Thailand to Singapore     Boxing (11): Thailand 8, Philippines 2, Vietnam 1   Men: -54 kg (-55 kg): Thailand, -60 kg: Thailand, -63.5 kg (-65 kg): Thailand, -69 kg (-70 kg): Thailand, -80 kg: Philippines   Women: -50 kg (-51 kg): Thailand, -54 kg: Thailand, -57 kg: Thailand, -60 kg: Vietnam, -66 kg (-65 kg): Thailand, -70 kg: Philippines     Sailing (7): Thailand 4, Singapore 2, Malaysia 1   ICLA 6: Switched from Thailand to Malaysia     Taekwondo (8): Thailand 6, Vietnam 2   -67 kg: Switched from  Vietnam to Thailand     Weightlifting (5): Thailand 2, Philippines 1, Indonesia 1, Malaysia 1   Men: -65 kg: Malaysia, -94 kg (-95 kg): Thailand   Women: -53 kg: Thailand, -69 kg: Philippines, -77 kg: Indonesia   * I saw that they have actually change the weight categories to almost match that of IWF newly introduced categories from several months ago.      Wrestling (12): Vietnam 7, Philippines 3, Indonesia 2   Men's Freestyle: -57 kg: Philippines, -65 kg: Vietnam, -74 kg: Vietnam, -86 kg: Philippines Men's Greco-Roman: -67 kg: Indonesia, -77 kg: Vietnam, -87 kg: Indonesia, -97 kg: Vietnam Women's Freestyle: -50 kg: Vietnam, -53 kg: Vietnam, -57 kg: Vietnam, -62 kg: Philippines
    • Many permutations possible in the last game, going to be a nail-biter!  v  is the live game on the Olympic Channel later today.   2025 WCF Curling Olympic Qualification Event – Kelowna, Canada   Team   Wins   Losses   Men       CHN 6   0     P USA 5   1     P JPN 4   2     NED 3   3     PHI 3   3     KOR 2   4     NZL 1   5     POL 0   6
    • This is absolutely ridiculous. If you aren’t willing to celebrate Pride then you should simply not come to Seattle. You have to respect local customs.   https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/c208392884jo
