Athletes Deaths Thread

Recommended Posts

Imrich Bugár (Athletics - Discus Throw) passed away today at 71.

Another one who was denied of a very likely Olympic title due stupid politicsm which forced all our at that times Czechoslovakian team to miss the LA 84 games.

1983 world champion and best ever slovak history athletics thrower.

RIP

Nancy Garapick, the Canadian swimmer, who would have won 2 gold medals in front of her home crowd in 1976 if the GDR's doping had been caught. died Monday aged 64.

I had not remembered that she set a world record in the 200 back in 1975 at the age of 13 yrs 7 months.  I can’t confirm this but I think she was the second youngest woman ever after Karen Muir to set a swimming world record.

A couple passings of note in April.

Tom Gayford :CAN  April 26, age 97. He was a gold medalist in the equestrian team jumping in 1968.

Lyudmila Lysenko  :URS  and :UKR   April 13, age 91.  She won the gold medal in the 800 meters in 1960.  This was the first time the women's 800 had been contested at the Olympics since 1928.
