Rowing at the Summer Olympic Games 2020

Bit of a disaster for Byrne and Doyle in the double sculls for Ireland. They expect to make the final and challenge for medals

Just watched the race there (thank you discovery plus) and their start was awful and they never really got going at all.

Hopefully just a flat day. Interesting that the heats and repechages only eliminate one boat

It’s disorientating seeing them row right to left :yikes:

First time at an Olympics since Athens. It's like looking at a race course where the horses run clockwise instead of anti-clockwise like Sandown Park.

Can't remember a less attractive rowing venue. Hopefully the water is cleaner than Rio.

I actually ended up liking the venue. Fantastic camera shots from under the bridge. Rowing needs more of that.

Chinese state media in charge of the TV signal of Rowing and Canoeing Sprint. They very proudly introduced their multi angles technology and cameras from ariel, land and water at the same time. TBH it's more advanced than before but also a bit annoyingly too-many angles in a single match for me.

Greek Stefanos Ntouskos seemed in a pretty good shape in his first race. He had the chance for an easy race, to get more familiar with the venue and to hold up his power for the next races. Hopefully he will have the same chance on Sunday, and then to give his all in the last two races. I understand that the fact that he won easily, or that he had the second best time of all qualifiers is not a legit sign that he is going for a medal, but who knows? For whoever watched the shape he was in, and how with few ropes gaining more meters, maybe we have a good shot here for a medal.

Change in race schedule

Summary:
Change in race schedule on Saturday, 24 July, Sunday, 25 July and Monday, 26 July

Details:
Based on the weather forecasts received from the Tokyo2020 Olympic Games weather services, adverse
weather is expected on Monday 26 July 2021 which would bring high winds and strong gusts creating probably
unequal and potentially unrowable racing conditions.
The weather forecast for Saturday 24 July 2021 and Sunday 25 July 2021 remains good. The World Rowing
Executive Committee has reviewed the options in Rule 63 and following consultations with IOC, Tokyo2020
Organising Committee and OBS have decided to make the following changes:

1. Racing will start at 8:00hrs with Repechage1 of W1x on Saturday 24 July 2021 and will follow the same order
of racing.
2. Men’s 8+ heats and Women’s 8+ heats will be moved from Sunday 25 July 2021 to Saturday 24 July 2021.
These races will start with M8+ H1 at 12:00hrs, followed by M8+ H2 at 12:10hrs, W8+ H1 at 12:20hrs, W8+ H2 at
12:30hrs.
3. All races planned on Monday 26 July 2021 will be moved to Sunday 25 July 2021 and will be held in the same
order starting at 11:00hrs with W1x Quarterfinals

100% job done from our rowers tonight, well done:)

100% also for Romania; Radis/Bodnar made another strong race, leading form start to finish and, after watching the NZL double, I dare to say our girls are the main contender for gold in W2x. Bet on it, if you've got some money to spare  :p

If the lights light up exactly at the correct moment, he was definitely first, since his light went on first. Not sure if those lights are 100% accurate though?

Not a fan of rowing past what looks like just some random industrial area, but I completely agree about the good camera work (especially related to the bridge) :cheer:

A bad 24 hours for us. Brutal boxing draw, Shane Ryan injured and the Double Sculls disaster. Can’t seem how they can retrieve this. One of best medal contenders in trouble already. They skipped the press conference too which is not a good sign.

    • There will be specialized double sculls...just not for an NOC if it is entering singles specialists.   Either enter 2 singles specialists, or 1 XD specialist pair.   But they can in theory compete in both events, I guess, if they qualify...our top M, I think, does both.   But there are 17M, 17W, and 30 Pairs allotted in the quota, so I don't think the intent is that every singles entry will be in doubles.   (Perhaps this gets to fall in line with Weightlifting, where due to max entry quota, an NOC can't enter in every event, even if they have the best athletes...here, unless you have a pair who qualifies in both.)

    • I read the Olympic qualification documents for weightlifting. A country can have the opportunity to send a maximum of 4 athletes in one gender, but the conditions are very strict.
    • world champion Jessica Schilder opened her season up with 19.78 in France.
    • wait! what???   so, there won't be specialized double sculls, but those boats would have to feature 2 single specialists if a Nation wants to enter 2 proper singles M+W??? tell me I misread the expalaination...
    • Yeah, they do get broadcast pretty regularly.  I remember even back in Bode Miller's day they would show the training.
