Diplomatic boycott?  what is this? Grow some balls and do a real full boycott if you care that much about human rights.

Typical duplicity of anglophone international relations.

They know athletes would not support it. In 1980 many athletes didn’t support it when their countries boycotted.

Can't speak for other countries, but in this one, the Olympic committee is not tied to the government.  So the government can't force the athletes to boycott here.  The USOPC changed their bylaws to stop outside influences from affecting their ability to compete.  And needless to say, athletes don't want to be told they can't compete.

From the other side of the fence, then-active Polish athletes are still bitter over the 1984 boycott as well. In fact to mask the obvious displeasure some aged athletes were allowed to leave the country just to silence the backlash (like '76 pentathlon champion Pyciak-Peciak).

By february, at least 20 will declare a diplomatic boycott while 170+ will throw their full support. Congratulations to China for another successful olympics. :torch:

Only 92 countries competed in Korea in 2018, so less than half the countries that normally show up at a Summer Olympics will likely be in China.  So far, the list of diplomatic boycotts are largely confined to the Anglosphere.. USA, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand.  Only European country that has committed to a boycott is Lithuania.  We'll see if other dominoes fall there.

Our president to the question about the so-called Diplomatic boycott answered that she will not attend the Olympics in Beijing, but also said that it is not an official boycott, since she never even planned to attend  :p

Talk about a snub of Petra Vlhová.

    • Yes, but what I mean for Serbia is that everything changed there (unfortunately for us ). 2022 was an unbelievable mess, that's not the case anymore now with just one athlete who has really gone for it and made it, so I'm 99% sure they'll accept it this time.   Who knows though. Plus there's always 1-2 bigger countries here or there who reject something, but it's not gonna be 16 places I'm afraid
    • Doping by Event Type When we look at which events have the most doping cases, a few categories stand out from recent sanction records: Long Distance (3,000m and above): 32% of cases Sprints (400m or less): 24% of cases Jumps: 12% of cases Javelin: 8% of cases Middle Distance (800m–1,500m): 8% of cases Hammer: 8% of cases Steeplechase (3,000m SC): 4% of cases
    • From 2020 to 2025    These three countries alone make up almost two-thirds (61.9%) of all current doping violations in athletics worldwide. It’s worth noting that 199 of World Athletics’ 214 member federations have no athletes on the current ban list. This means the problem is really concentrated in a small number of places. Here’s a look at the top countries: Rank Country Total Violations Percentage Region 1 Kenya 119 24.74% Africa 2 India 108 22.45% Asia 3 Russia 73 15.18% Europe 4 China 26 5.40% Asia 5 Turkey 20 4.16% Europe 6 Italy 18 3.74% Europe 7 South Africa 18 3.74% Africa 8 Ukraine 17 3.53% Europe 9 United States 16 3.33% North America 10 Morocco 15 3.12% Africa
