sorry but this is stupid to even think/talk about boycotting the Olympics in 2020 !

and this is funny , it mostly comes from countries who claim nobody should mix sports with politics. well yes off course it's only bad when the others do that.

That is what upsets me most about U.S. action/opinion on international affairs/events. I’m fine with, and enjoy taking, the moral high ground, but don’t pollute it with a bunch of hypocrisy.

People keep forgetting that most of Africa boycotted 1976 Olympics for a rather bizarre, but essentially quite similar reason (human rights concerns).

So it's not just something the West does...

Africa threatened to boycott the 1968 Olympics so hard that they got the IOC to toss out South Africa until apartheid ended :d

The Eastern Block also threatened to join that boycott.

Olympic boycotts (or close calls) were extremely common throughout the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s. They happened for all types of reasons too. Podium protests were also a big issue in that period.

Anyone remember the 1964 Summer Olympic boycott?

There was only one reason - politics.

Politics always ruins sport but you want the Cold War to return so I'm not surprised you're trying to justify another boycott. For someone who calls himself 'progressive' using apartheid and Cold War reasons sounds very un-progressive :p

“What reasons?“ might be a better phrasing of that question.

Covid-19 - Some countries still blame China for the virus, and may not be excited to attend the Games. Plus, China’s poor early response to Covid-19 might turn more athletes/NOCs off from attending.

I’m sure you can add classic PRC issues like general human rights, Tibet, Republic of China v. People’s Republic of China, etc. to that list as well.

I directly blame Winnie the Pooh and the rest of China's Communist leadership for this shitty pandemic.

I really feel bad for the Chinese people, though.

You have the "holy" united states of america and their "holy" allies in nato and "beacon of human rights and democracy" europe bombing and committing genocide in the middle east for more than 20 years yet no one bats an eye.

Meanwhile adrian zenz, the homophobic fundamentalist Christian who claims his anti-China crusade is ordained by God is the source of these idiots who claim China is committing genocide in Xinjiang.

Yep, being exempted from one-child policy and having preferential treatments for university acceptance for uyghurs are genocide.

Having 20000 mosques in China is anti-Islam.

Idiots, expected if you look at the current states of the countries in the western world. Good luck.

Anyone who has a lick of sense knows that there won't be a boycott. We are at a point where American players can't even criticize China because they want their money. The NHL would never miss an opportunity to promote their sport and athletes on a market as popular as China. They would go as far as to order every NHL athlete to not say anything about Hong Kong. The boycott would hurt the US (NHL) much more than it would hurt China. This isn't the Cold War anymore... because China already won this "Second Cold War".

People outside the US literally can’t say worst things about the US than Americans themselves say, frankly the most unfairly harsh critics of America come from within. We air our dirty laundry. Which is, incidentally, what I appreciate the most about living in the US.

If the PRC didn’t have anything to hide they wouldn’t crack down on free speech.
