You are so terribly wrong here, I know Canada is far away from Eastern and Middle Europe but you must know that a lot of people care about Belarus here right now, and although I criticise IOC in different matters a lot, this decision involving Lukashenka and co. was really good. it sounds like something expensive and beside that how come something like this can have TV coverage ? TV guys are going to race with them the entire weekend ?

 

in that kind of races, the coverage normally is about webcams placed on the boats and satellite tracking, plus aerial coverage (with helicopters and fixed cameras) of the finish area...

 

it's like you can already see in regattas like the Vandèe Globe or the Quebec-Saint Malo or the Sydney-Hobart (just to name 3 of the most prestigious races of this kind in the world)...

 

and yes, those races are expensive (in terms of boats research and construction) and above all, they are very dangerous (only a few specialists can cope with offshore sea weather conditions...and sometimes tragedies happen in any case)...

 

it's definitely not a sport with a possible wide base of participants (basically there's no chance to match the current IOC criteria -worldwide spreading, gender equality, tv friendly action- for including it into the Games program)...

Idk in other countrys, but events like Volvo Ocean Race and things like that are far more popular in Spain that any other sailing event.

 

The Offshore event would have drawn some attention, at least here.

My comment was made in jest hence the emoji at the end. Belarus matters and happy to see the IOC take action here. The order of the announcements yesterday could have been better.

It's not that bad. I don't support most of the proposals, but few of them have been accepted, anyway. The problem is that many people here are on the verge of being hysterical about any change on the program.  How come they are trying to ruin the "older games" while weightlifting and boxing are still part of the program? So, now people pretend to care about the 50 km walk event too? Do you guys really want to watch swimmers from smaller nations clocking times that you guys could probably beat after two or three years of serious training?

I understand that many federations lost quotas, but there has to be a limit. I was mad about artistic gymnastics losing quotas at first, but after giving it some thought, I think it's okay. In my opinion, the only federation which might have had it really bad is ICF, but even so it's not like the whole world will riot with changes in such a minor sport. I'm sorry to canoe fans, but that's the way it is.

I support gender equality and inclusion of more medal events for women, but I'm not that into mixed events -- still, they comprise only 22 events, while 307 events will remain single-gender. Skate, surfing and breakdancing will coexist with modern pentathlon, badminton and fencing. Wider audiences will enjoy football while a small number of nations will enjoy more field hockey.

Bottom line is: it could have been much worse. If they go for a truly global and more urban take on the program, many other sports will be doomed. As it is, there's still room for pretty much everybody to enjoy the program. It's not perfect, of course, but it's not like it was before by any stretch of the imagination.

Slovakia won in Rio 4 medals 2 Golds and 2 Silvers

 

Golds: 50km Race Walk and Canoe Slalom M C2

Silvers: Canoe Sprint K4-1000m and Canoe Slalom M C1

 

2 of them already are not in the Tokyo program, the third will be cut after the games. Not sure if anybody can beat us in this stat

Almost feels like that CSLX thing was added out of pity for Slovakia.
