Holy shit, Mihályvári! OQT time in women's 400 medley and huge upset inside the Hungarian team, it looks like Mihályvári will be our second choice for 400IM, not Jakabos.

Csaba Sós confirmed it after the ECh that the target for Hungary in Tokyo is still 1 gold and another 2 or 3 medals. Probably 1 gold + 1 medal from Milák and another 1 or 2 medals from Hosszú, Kapás and/or Kenderesi.

Sarah Sjöström will race her first race after she broke her arm tomorrow in Canet. In the same race, Therese Alshammar will make a very surprising come back in her first race after Rio 2016 which was her 6th olympics. At the age of 43, the most medalled european swimmer Will try to make it to her 7th olympics.

  • 3 weeks later...

Settecolli meet in Rome (ITA)

last international event before the end of the qualification period...

on day 1, 2 new Italian National records highlighted the evening session...

Nicolò Martinenghi won the men's 100m breaststroke, improving to 58.29* (beating :NED Arno Kamminga, who swam 58.40, with a great comeback in the last 20m)...

*4th fastest specialists ever over the distance...

Arianna Castiglioni once again was better than Benedetta Pilato and Martina Carraro (the 2 selected swimmers for this race in the Italian squad) in the women's 100m Breaststroke...

she improved our National record to 1.05.67...Pilato swam 1.05.84 and Carraro 1.06.08...

among others, :HUN Kristof Milak won the men's 100m Fly in 50.89 (in this race we saw Santo Condorelli's comeback with a promising 51.62, just a few hundreds of a second better than Federico Burdisso and the other best Italian specialists); Sarah Sjostrom won the women's 50m Fly in 25.42, edging out :NED Ranomi Kromowidjojo (25.43); :BRA Bruno Fratus won the men's 50m Free in 21.71 (Alessandro Miressi was second in 21.97 and Santo Condorelli was 3rd in 22.00)...

Finally, Federica Pellegrini had a solo show in the women's 200m free (1.56.23 her time) and Simona Quadarella also had more or less a training session in the women's 1500m Free (15.48.81 for her)...

4:09.57 from Dávid Verrasztó in men's 400 IM. Maybe he still has a good chance for the medal in Tokyo, but I have a hard time believing in it after waiting for his first Olympic medal for such a long time.

Settecolli meet in Rome (ITA)

best of day #2

said of Verraszto, for :HUN we also had Milak and Hosszu shining today...

Milak won the men's 200m Fly (1.53.18), Katinka won the women's 400m IM (4.36.31)...

the women's 100m Fly were won by :SWE Sarah Sjostrom, but in a very modest time (for her standard), 57 "high"...

the women's 100m Free, instead, went to :NED Femke Heemskerk (53.03) ahead of the same Sjostrom (53.47) and :NED Ranomi Kromowidjojo (53.55)...

4th was Federica Pellegrini (53.71)...

for what concerns the Italian swimmers, once again Benedetta Pilato (29.69) and Arianna Castiglioni (30.06, PB) were the best in the women's 50m Breaststroke, meanwhile the same race in the men's division went to Nicolò Martinenghi in 26.59...

finally, the 100m Free were won quite surprisingly by Thomas Ceccon (48.14, PB) ahead of Alessandro Miressi (48.16), while Santo Condorelli was 3rd in 48.49...

in the last event of the day, Simona Quadarella won the women's 800m Free and :BRA Guilherme Pereira Da Costa won the same race in the men's division, but both didn't swim any remarkable time...

    • Qualification status that could realistically change this week, barring (except where noted) new time qualifying performances :   Men   500m : pretty much done   1000m : pretty much done   1500m : pretty much done   5000m : one outlier at the moment  Semirunniy. He's currently not qualified for the distance being 18/15 in the rankings and R1 time-wise. He could still punch his ticket :    either by getting into the top 15 with a very good result (a podium or even a win would be needed). If it is at the expanse of  Henriksen or, less likely,  Swings, then the loser is out. If it is at the expanse of any other, then  Sasaki is out.  or by hoping Lorello gets into the top 15 at the expanse of Henriksen or Swings. or by going faster than Sasaki (6'08''834) which seems reachable after his 10k, even in Hamar.   10000m : once again Henriksen is on the bubble. If  Maly, Petzold of  Farthofer gets into the top 9 at the expanse of Malfatti or Snellink, then he's out.    Mass-start : not much at stake considering most of the reserve skaters will already receive an additional quota - at the moment    . Morino  will try to enter top 32 and be in those additional quota spots.    Team pursuit : pretty much done   Women   500m : pretty much done   1000m : with  Thorup not cleared to participate one more spot is up for grabs.  Scholz would need to be in front of both Herzog (done as she's not entered) and Czerwonka (7 points) after this final week.  Silaeva would be left out.    1500m : Lamarche not competing and  Zofia Braun being promoted to A division, Poland has got a real shot at a second quota. Braun will need to stay in front of Scholz and Weidemann, who could still finish ahead of her depending on how good Braun fares in A division.  Smedding would suffer from a Polish rise.   3000m : match-up between  Yang and  Horikawa only separated by 3 points. At the moment Yang is out (R2) but if they exchange position in the standings then Horikawa is out (R1). They could also both finish ahead of Hofmann, at the expanse of  Golubeva ultimately.  Jasch has a small shot at a second German quota too, by edging the former two skaters, eliminating them.    5000m : pretty much done   Mass-start :  Santo Rodrigues is hanging on by a thread. The cruelty of it is that those immediately behind her -    - will get an aditional spot anyways, so it does not really matter if they finish in the top 24 ahead of her, except it would allow France to enter a second skater and two girls in the MS.   Team pursuit : three-way asymetrical tie for the last SOQP spot between   and , all in division A. Norway needs to beat both as they can't rely on a time Q, Kazakhstan needs to beat Norway to ensure (if they fail to beat China) the first SOQT spot and avoid the Italian wild-card*, whereas China is pretty safe. *  is currently out but they "only" need to get into a reserve spot to be qualified, which is going faster than 3'00'92 (or faster than Norway if they too decide to skate faster). They were not far off this mark in Hamar earlier this year but the team was in a better shape overall.
