I don't get the criticism. I would love to have the traditional combined back but with modern level of specialisation it's not happening. This team format is a compromise I'm perfectly fine with. Today's competition was exciting.

To me this is like biathlon but with one guy doing the skiing and another one doing the shooting.

I personally didn't especially like this format. It feels a bit arbitrary to me; you could create a number of different results just based on who happened to be paired with who. Then again if there were only one team per nation there would be so few entries, and I suppose the second skier knows where they lie based on their teammates performance and so can adjust based on that but still. The skeleton mixed team is the same.
