:BEL Belgium

Women

Raheleh Asemani (-57kg)

Men

Si Mohamed Ketbi (-58kg)

Jaouad Achab (-68kg)

Yep, Asemani. We all know the story I guess and I think we all have the same opinion on this.

The other big thing is Ketbi is selected after all, after a whole lot of problems with staying under the weight limit. Meaning Mourad Laachraoui isn't going to Rio and the Dutch headlines of a while back ("Brother of Brussels terrorist going to Rio") were indeed bullshit, as expected.

At least we're going to avoid a bunch of uncomfortable fluff pieces I guess...

The Asenani situation is really unfortunate, but oh well. It's debatable if Belgium earned that spot, but Asemani won it for herself fair and square.

Yeah, my problem really is not with Asemani herself. Indeed, she was apparently good enough to qualify. The problem is with Belgium not having a quota place and Belgium apparently having "two" athletes at the OQT where one was allowed.

Yes, Belgium made a mess of this but what can you do... This sudden Refugee team idea just shows how much influnce mass media has on IOC... It's not like refugees didn't exist before last year.

Asemani at least qualified. Meanwhile, they have given wild cards to some track & field athletes who literally don't have personal best times. Considering that, we might easily see some of the slowest times in Olympic history... Ethiopian marathon is the only one who actually has a PB. I just hope that some athletes who actually deserve to take part in the Olympics will not miss out because wild cards had to be given to such athletes...

" The draw for the Taekwondo competition will be conducted on 15 August 2016, two (2) days before the start of the competition, by officials from the WTF. All ranked athletes will be seeded in each weight division, with the seedings determined by the WTF Olympic Ranking lists."

    • There is a transgender volleyball player here in Brazil; there was even a recent controversy (this year) when a city banned her from playing in a certain competition, which ended up in court, ultimately in her favor.   But the situation is much simpler than that; the reason for this decision is because of the two female boxers who won at Paris 2024 (who apparently are not transgender).

    • there were rumors about it for quite a while, but as I wrote, it was never confirmed so, it might well be just some haters throwing out some shit on her 🤷
    • Where did you get that?   I'm not sure I would have considered her to have dissapeared from out of nowhere, at least since after Tokyo... she did win medals at the next two World Championships. I think it's just recently, she's been struggling with injury which is why she's completely out of form...
    • Even though I'm not the biggest fan of her, always sucks to see a career ending through injury and not on your own terms
    • This is going to have an effect on very likely 0 athletes, possibly 1 or 2 we don't really know about yet. It's really mostly the cheapest possible way for them to make a sort of political statement, without having any significant backlash since it won't really affect anyone at the top level of international sports.   Edit: worded a bit wrong, I was thrown off by everywhere 'trans women' being mentioned as the target of this. Of course there is also the somewhat larger category of DSD and the likes, which will certainly affect a few athletes - unfortunately they are often thrown under the bus or mentioned as 'not really women anyway' or something like that, despite, you know, being.
    • Mary Rand has died aged 86. The first British woman to win a Gold in track and field at the 1964 Tokyo Games (where she also took home a further two medals in the Women’s 4x100m relay and Pentathlon).
    • Athing Mu competed in the USA trials in 2024 and 2025 post the 2023 rule changes. She also won Gold in 2022 and Bronze in 2023.    Jelimo the jury is out. She doesn’t look male like the other two do.
    • People focus on trans people because it's easier to pinpoint the affected athletes. Meanwhile it's the athletes with (suspected) DSDs that will have tougher time to convince the authorities and the public opinion that they belong to women's sports.
