This has been a thing for a while. 2023 was suppose to be the Olympic program plus a couple of extra sports. Ultimately it ended up with only bodybuilding (which was added in 2019) missing out. I think what will happen is the host must include the Olympic program and the other sports are optional. The good news for the non-Olympic sports is they are relatively cheap to host. Don't know if the hosts have any saying in this, but if the Games are hosted by Brazil in the near future, we probably would get rid of many non-Olympic sports.
