[OFF TOPIC] Coronavirus Pandemic

Recommended Posts

Am starting to wonder if I had omicron.  About two weeks ago had a sore throat, sneezing fits & runny nose, which people now say are classic symptoms.  Probably infected dozens, like Typhoid Mary.

How's it going in your countries? Here we went into a sort of mild lockdown a week ago and probably tonight they'll announce a tightening of that, with all non-essential shops and services having to close and all schools as well.

That's a positive surprise! Last thing I heard out of Brazil (2-3 months ago or so) was basically that numbers are lower but that's because nobody gets tested anymore (and no tests means 'no cases') and most people never really cared about any rules anyway :p

This sounds better now.

New Year lockdowns are strengthening friendship between peoples!  Scots & Welsh escaping stupid lockdown laws are heading en masse to the English Border, Dutch heading for the Belgian border for the same reason!

Which for some reason makes the Belgians angry. Which is kind of odd, since they did exactly the same thing last year and were furious when Dutch complaints were appearing

Not that I'm planning to go into Belgium. The situation is pretty clearly not good enough to go about all the usual things, but of course it's easy to see which kind of people are going into Belgium "because I need to go to a restaurant!" or "because I need those new designer jeans!". Not people who care about anything.

President of the Philippines is threatening to have unvaccinated people arrested (!) following record numbers of newly infected. So much for things being all dandy on the archipelago. :p

    • There is a transgender volleyball player here in Brazil; there was even a recent controversy (this year) when a city banned her from playing in a certain competition, which ended up in court, ultimately in her favor.   But the situation is much simpler than that; the reason for this decision is because of the two female boxers who won at Paris 2024 (who apparently are not transgender).

    • there were rumors about it for quite a while, but as I wrote, it was never confirmed so, it might well be just some haters throwing out some shit on her 🤷
    • Where did you get that?   I'm not sure I would have considered her to have dissapeared from out of nowhere, at least since after Tokyo... she did win medals at the next two World Championships. I think it's just recently, she's been struggling with injury which is why she's completely out of form...
    • Even though I'm not the biggest fan of her, always sucks to see a career ending through injury and not on your own terms
    • This is going to have an effect on very likely 0 athletes, possibly 1 or 2 we don't really know about yet. It's really mostly the cheapest possible way for them to make a sort of political statement, without having any significant backlash since it won't really affect anyone at the top level of international sports.   Edit: worded a bit wrong, I was thrown off by everywhere 'trans women' being mentioned as the target of this. Of course there is also the somewhat larger category of DSD and the likes, which will certainly affect a few athletes - unfortunately they are often thrown under the bus or mentioned as 'not really women anyway' or something like that, despite, you know, being.

    • People focus on trans people because it's easier to pinpoint the affected athletes. Meanwhile it's the athletes with (suspected) DSDs that will have tougher time to convince the authorities and the public opinion that they belong to women's sports.
