China had 3 pairs in top 8 in WD. BWF assumed that China would chose top 2 pairs resulting in Zhao Yunlei being selected in two events, which would create an additional quota in WS, which was allocated to Lithuania. This quota was always conditional as can be seen by the official BWF document quoted below:

If an athlete qualifies (and is selected) in more than one (1) event, then the unused athlete quota place will be allocated to the next best ranked athlete of the same gender in the singles event on the World Ranking Lists of 5 May 2016. The offer of this Quota Place will however be conditional on the athlete who is qualified in more than one (1) events being confirmed and entered by his/her NOC in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

 

China had to confirm that it will use two quotas in WD by May 31 and announce its team by 18 July. China never said that it will select Zhao/Tian. China didn't make any change. Though sad for Lithuanian player, she must have been prepared for this. And blaming China (or BWF) for this is simply wrong.

With the Luo twins selected, it means Tian Qing must stay at home. Plus, one WS quota is abolished (because Zhao Yunlei only play in XD) which means Akvile Stapusaityte won't be competing at the Olympics

Wow. Unexpected and cruel. BWF should not inform federations that they have a quota if it is only conditional and can be taken away 20 days before. Poor Akvilė.

When two (2) players are tied in the same group, the winner of the match between them will be ranked higher. If three (3) players are tied within a group, their positions will be determined by the difference between games won and games lost. If three (3) players are still tied after this has been taken into account, their positions will be determined by the difference between total points won and total points lost. If, after one (1) or more of these tiebreakers, only two (2) players are tied, the winner of the match between them will qualify. If, after both tiebreakers, all three (3) players are still tied, their positions will be then determined by drawing lots.

hmm, so i'm confused, this is a group from london, 3 way tie

number 1 and 2 have game difference of 2

but the point difference is better with the chinese... yet they are second

This group system is a mess really. Some group have 2 athletes, some 3.

 

The only thing that I like about group system is that it allows weaker athletes to do more than one match, so their Olympic experience is longer.

Since, three teams are tied at 2 points each, first tie break is applied (Set score). Danes and Chinese have +2 set score and Japanese have +1 set score. At this stage, Japanese are eliminated as they have the worst set score. Now, only 2 teams are left tied. Hence, H2H is used as tie-break. Danes defeated Chinese in their match and hence are ranked higher. 

 

P.S. It was this second position in group for Chinese team that led to comical matches and eventual disqualification of 4 teams and an unexpected and lucky bronze for Russians

Some good and some bad draws.

Easy group for Jan, but he will have to beat Lin Dan to get a medal. Tougher group for Viktor. Would say that's the toughest in the men's singles. But if he makes it through as first, he has a very decent way to a semi final.

For Line it'll be tough. She has been capable of challenging Marin, but it should be an easy group win for Marin.

Tough for the XD as well.

It could end up as a struggle for the WD. Their 2nd by the rankings, but the Chinese pair will be a challenge as well.

Meanwhile it's close to a dream group for the MD. They have a pretty good record against the korean pair and the other 2 should surely be beatable, though it's of course a question of wheter Mogensen is back in top shape.
