I think we're approaching the lowest point ever by our glorious sport of Rowing

between injuries, retirements, unsuccessful transitions to the senior level (when not just lack of talent), people giving priority to their studies in the US colleges and questionable decisions by our coaches, we will be lucky if we can qualify to the Olympics 3 men's boats (2X, 4X, LW2X) and 1 women's boat (the Tokyo Gold Medallists Rodini & Cesarini in the LW2X)

the W 4X might also have a slim chance, but they would need to pull out a miracle

meanwhile I don't see how any other remaining boats can even get close to a qualifying result

dreaming of medals, 3 - no gold (M 2X, M 4X, M LW2X) would be a huge success

'Cause it's difficult to find 8 high-value athletes to put in (just) one boat; this is a good indicator of a country's depth in rowing.

Not to mention, you then need to find another six to compete in the other boats, and that’s not even considering athletes in the sculls.

And the Eights come from mainly English Speaking countries..Canada,US,GB,NZ and Aus. Add Germany, Romania and Netherlands and thats pretty much it. If they are the Blue Riband of rowing then why are so few countries competing?

So few countries compete because everyone other than the biggest countries will naturaly focus on the pair and the four. Given the resources required the eight is very much an all or nothing proposition because it takes away athletes from two different Olympic events.

Also, I think if we were to cut rowing events the "middle" events (the fours and the double scull) make the most sense to eliminate. It still leaves the smaller boats, where more nations are competitive, while also leaving the heavier, more spectacular and more prestigious classes.

Eliminating the fours would also lead to more countries building eights.

I’ve been thinking about a similar idea for a while too. My proposed program would be: Single Scull, LW Double Scull, Quad Scull, Pair, Eights

World Rowing could then re-route the newly freed quotas to increase field sizes in those events.

Rowing has to be one of the least competitive sports to be part of Olympics. Europeans might not like it but yeah it should be cut down to just 4 or 5 events per gender.  Surely over 100 non Olympic sports exist which have a more competitive field than rowing.

A little bit of hyperbole there, hopefully. While rowing is a bit cumbersome on athlete quotas, there has been a good diversity in competing nations and medalists at the Olympic Games.

Please do list them.

17 different countries won medals in Tokyo.

11 different countries won gold.

Of the 14 golds won, 8 of them won by non-European nations

Only gold won by Romania in Tokyo. 1 of 2 won by Ireland, Greece. 1 of 3 by Croatia

One of the only sports where the USA didn’t win a medal

Overall I think that’s a decent record.

Obviously :CAN:USA:AUS:NZL:CHN:RSA are all European nations.

Rowing is actually one of the few sport where every continent (counting North and South America as separate continents) has won an Olympic gold.
