INTERNATIONAL SURFING ASSOCIATION AND WORLD SURF LEAGUE REACH LANDMARK AGREEMENT ON OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION

The International Surfing Association (ISA) today announced an agreement with the World Surf League (WSL) on the qualification principles for surfing in the Olympics Games Tokyo 2020, ensuring the participation of the world’s best surfers from the WSL Championship Tour (CT) as well as promoting universal opportunities for surfers around the world.

In principle, the agreement will see up to 18 of the 40 places at the Games reserved for WSL Championship Tour (CT) surfers (10 men and eight women), with the remaining 22 places determined at the 2019 and 2020 ISA World Surfing Games, the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, and a single slot (each for men and women) for the host nation (Japan).

With the support of the WSL, the ISA eligibility rules for Olympic participation will require surfers to make themselves available for their national teams to compete in the ISA World Surfing Games in 2019 and 2020 and, if selected by their National Federation, to participate.

The final decision on the complete process is subject to the approval of the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at its meeting in February 2018.

So... why America gets a continental spot and not Europe or Africa?

Surfing is not being held at those respective continental games.

But since when that care for continental quotas?

They just celebrate the qualification event in other competition and that's it.

It's possible, that the quota for other continents will be given at other competition - like European quotas for women's football at FIFA Women's World Cup.

My guess is that the other continental quotas will he given out as part of the world surfing games or the tour.

the other Continental Quota will be surely awarded through the World Surfing Games (where normally all the best surfers in the world are there) because they only asked the crème-de-la-crème of surfing sport (the WSL crew) to be available for that event, meanwhile the Continental Champs run by ISA generally speaking have much lower level of participation and it would make no sense using that as a selection race...

I guess the Pan_Am Games are a concession to the organizers for putting a surfing event on the program and because this sport is mainly practiced at the top level in that Continent (with the notable exception of France -thanks above all to the Oversea's Territories- Australia and South Africa...and maybe even Portugal, but still they're not quite there yet with those 3 Countries and the top American Nations -USA and Brazil more than others)...
