Tokyo Summer Olympic Games 2020 News

Hard to understand for me that at least vaccinated viewers was not an option at all :(

I also hope IOC and the OC will find a way to at least somehow artificially improve the atmosphere in sports venues.

I think the news of the absence of the public will cause other qualified athletes to forfeit

Doubt it, the athletes are already used to these circumstances. An Olympic gold doesn't lose its value if there are no spectators.

Really seems that the US is the only country that could have held the Olympics safely this summer. Going to be very weird to go from full crowds at the US Olympic trials to nobody at all in Tokyo.

(I know the Euros have full crowds but I still question the wisdom of that)

At this point, I think everyone will be eager to forget these Games asap. Most of all the Japanese people.

Japan is taking a big L on this one in many ways, it's certainly a bad look that this is where they are with COVID while Europe is having an EURO 2020 with a lot of fans. But as long as there isn't a big COVID outbreak among the athletes, this is going to be a more legit Games than 1980 and 1984 in terms of results. So yeah, if Japan doesn't mess it up (even more), I think it's going to be fine and we will still get many memorable moments.

Once the games start the lack of crowds in most sports will be forgotten. Athletics, beach volleyball, gymnastics and basketball will suffer from the lack of crowds but who notices crowds at rowing? Judo? wrestling?  In any case Athletics is the second week and they reverse that decision if everything is going well.

I attended the Boxing in Barcelona and for earlier rounds the arena was about 10% full. My family at home saw me in the crowd every day I was there as the camera kept homing in on the 20-30 noisy Irish bunched together. Even the finals were only half full. I also attened the tennis one day with Graf and other big names playing and the place was near empty. Very different in London admittedly.

    • Weightlifting formula is more or less similar to 2020 which was considered terrible by everybody!    this is a tough sport, you can't be in your best shape for too many events. there will be risks of serious injuries this way. with these rules you need 5 good results to qualify. if you bomb out in an event to score a zero you are out of the Olympics unless you replace it with another event. which means most of these poor guys have to participate in 7-8 events (and not just 5) to make up for possible bomb outs.    most importantly if you get injured anytime during this period (almost 2 years) you are out of the Olympics! that's how Sohrab Moradi missed the Tokyo Olympics despite breaking the WR during the qualification period. you can miss the Olympics in 2028 if you get injured late 2026 !  Karlos Nasar couldn't win the Olympic title if we had these rules in 2024   I understand 2024 qualification formula wasn't great either, it had its own flaws but this one is much worse for threatening athletes' health.

Although the agenda has not been published yet, there shouldn’t be any major items over these two days, apart from the election of a member of the IOC Executive Board. This will be the eighth time the session is held in Italy, the last one being during the Turin 2006 Olympic Games.

    • Weightlifting We now have six events per gender with a total of 10 athletes per event.   The Olympic Qualification Rankings will be based on the sum of the total results of five events (three from period 1 and two from period 2). The top 8 will qualify.   The 9th spot will also be based on the OQR, but it will go to the highest ranked athlete from an unrepresented continent.   The 10th spot will be split between the host and universality (3 each per gender). Should the United States qualify normally then their host quota will be reduced, first going to an athlete from an unrepresented continent then to the overall highest ranked athlete.   Additionally, a "Best Lifter" will be awarded which would give the nation the chance to qualify 4 athletes rather than the max of 3.
