Trick is in the Duets

As we approach yet another exciting Grand Final of the 2022 Totallympics Open International Song Contest, to be staged in Czech Republic tomorrow, we will take one last glimpse at the stats. We have spoken about song duration, but what about artists?

Solo, Band, Duet, Collaboration

For this analysis we have decided to split all of the 656 artists who have taken part at TISC to date into four distinct categories: Solo, Band, Duet, Collaboration. Solo (single performer) and Band (a musical group) are the most basic and most commonly represented categories. Duet implies having exactly two performers. For example, two singers or one singer + one DJ. Collaboration represents the widest variety of artists. Here we have grouped all musical collaborations between three or more solo performers, one solo performer + one or more duet/band, or any other combination of solo artists, duets and bands.

Out of 656 artists presented to date, we count 326 (49.7%) solo artists, 224 (34.1%) bands, 63 (9.6%) duets and 43 (6.6%) collaborations.

Various types of artists are represented differently between Annual and Open editions. In the Annual editions, the share of solo artists tends to be much higher, while in the Open editions bands take up a larger role. Both duets and collaborations tend to be more represented in the Annual editions.

Trick is in the Duets

So which type of artists scores the most points? We have crunched the numbers and it turns out that duets on average score the most points. An average song performed in a duet is awarded 2.41 points per jury. Solo artists come in second with 2.32 average points per jury, followed by collaborations at 2.08 and finally bands at just 2.05 average points per jury.

Therefore, an average solo artist will score 13% (!!) more points than an average band.

Looking at the results of Open, only, it's the duets that again come on top with an average of 2.50 points per jury. They are followed by solo artists at 2.37, bands at 1.99 and collaborations which are quite unpopular at just 1.75.

Looking at the results of Annual, however, things look quite different. Modern collaborations appear to be vastly appreciated among the TISC juries with an average collaboration entry being rewarded 2.40 points per jury. Duets come in second here with an average of 2.34 points per jury, followed by solo artists at 2.27 and finally bands at 2.15.

National juries

Naturally, different juries will always prefer different types of artists in their voting. We have decided to investigate this and the results here have certainly been interesting.

We have ranked juries by their relative affinity for each of the four types of artists. Calculations were based on the juries' voting history. Only the juries taking part at the 2022 Open are included.

As an example, voting history shows that the juries of Kazakhstan, Egypt and Slovenia appreciate solo artists the most. New Zealand, meanwhile, appreciates them the least, as opposed to bands which @Wanderer appreciates more than any other juror - as we all already knew.

There are many other interesting factoids to be found around here. Venezuelan jury reportedly appreciates both duets and collaborations more than anyone else, while our TISC stalwart @OlympicIRL appears to host a very curious disliking towards duets. And so on.

Do take your time to analyze these rankings and see where your jury is to be found!

Alarm at 05.25 for tomorrow morning so Brazil can vote, fantastic :p

As for the Netherlands, it'll be hard, we have a lunch appointment at around 18.00 Dutch time, and that won't be done within two hours. I'll see if it works on my phone, if I have internet.

I’ll have to miss the first voting block and half of the second, but best of luck to everyone! I’m excited to see how the team competition plays out. I trust @dcro to rule on any unforeseen issues in that regard.

Let’s go Stags :cheer:

Lenny would want to start our event by her new song "live. laugh. cry". Enjoy!
