They're doing 20 km mass starts now?  Well, that's one thing Masako Ishida probably hasn't tried in her life before :p

And I assume she liked it, judging by her best World Cup result in over three years :d

I find it a bit of a weird distance, but on the other hand, it's a gazillion times better than having made the men's individual races 10k. That is just awful.

The strategy should be pretty simple. If you want to get more attention, then give the people what they want. My assumption is that most viewers prefer tight races, so if certain types of races are more likely to have tight finishes, then have more of those races. I also would assume that shorter distances tend to produce more tight finishes.

Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be obtained only by someone who is detached.

I suppose not enough people even care about cross country to have any opinon. Everyone knows mass starts are TV demand and it will come down to a sprint finish from the pack. So you can tune in for the last 2 kms at best and do away with the first 18. I mean all the usual suspects end up in the lead pack anyway as evident by the final results. Ishida getting 12th place will never be sold as proof how "exciting" this format is.

Yep, it's like flat stages in Tour De France, I don't like it.

But a Grand Tour needs flat stages too, climbers aren't the only good cyclists :p

Judging by people commenting on it, more than a ton of other Olympic sports and events, apparently.
