I guess it's because some smileys still has to "adapt" to the https link.

And as dcro said, it's : d, I avoided the : D to avoid conflicts with flags codes.

That's how it's been since forever...

It has been :D too since forever, I've literally always typed :D (except for the rare occassion where I missed Shift) and it always works, like :P which also doesn't work anymore :P
