While the whole hockey planet is preparing for the World Championships which will start tomorrow in Finland... in the other part of the globe, :RUS organized a mini-3- teams-tournament in the huge St. Petersburg arena, a former USSR championship :p

You imagine, the arena full of enormous former soviet superstars like Tretiak, Mikhailov, Kasatonov, Datsyuk etc.. and super happy fans waving russian flags, celebrating and pushing their glorious national team to the triuph against opponents from :BLR and :RUS

Yes, because to the complete shock of local authorities :KAZ declined the invitation for obvious reason (since they prefered to play the world championships) They just added the Russian U20 Nationa Team to the tourney.

Interesting was that all :BLR naturalized Canadiens and Americans suddenly disappeared and Belarus fielded a roster completely of BLR born players for the first time since the invention of wheel, their head coach, the Canadian Woodcroft is still here, he even signed a new deal with BLR federation for next 2 years.

The fact that the guy is a bit disoriented was generally well known, but that so much ! This is really surprising, he even mentioned after the matches what a marvelous chance, what a great opportunity for his young players to shine in such huge tournament...

Team Russia obviously won the tourney, The local TV showed how the captain received a beautiful trophy infront of super excited local fans

No single mention that world hockey continuing to live without the Russians/Belarussians and it will hardly change anytime soon…

If anyone interested here the results :p

Exhibition Games (1st and 2nd May in Tula, Russia)

:RUS - :BLR  5-2

:RUS - :BLR  3-2 after Overtime

"Ex-USSR" or however the name of the Tournament was (6th-8th May in St. Petersburg, Russia)

Gold Medal Match: :RUS - :BLR  3-2

1.  :RUS

2. :BLR

3. :RUS U20

:RUS & :BLR  hockey National Teams will not compete also at next the year's World Championships, which will take place in Tampere and Riga from 12 to 28 May 2023.

However At the International Congress of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), the delegates decided to "freeze" their participation in all world championships.

The Congress discussed also about logistical difficulties resulting from the exclusion of both countries, which affected the composition of the World Championships tournaments and the designation of relegating and advancing teams.

According to IIHF president Luc Tardiff, the eventual future return of Russia and Belarus to the World Champs will bring the same challenges.

However it is certain that In the future, when the IIHF will remove the suspension, both countries should return to the Men´s Top division category.

Still wondering what this "freezing" will means in the Olympic qualification, only 1 tournament is reamining, next year WCH. and if we count another 0 points for Russia like from this year, this must means no direct quota for them, but again I have no idea what they have in minds with that freezing

That bold text seems pretty fair, at least if this whole thing doesn't take 5 years or something. Just like for example in biathlon, them not participating next season shouldn't mean that when they are allowed back, they can only have 1 World Cup quota or something.

But yeah, very curious what this means for the Olympic qualification situation...I guess we'll see. You know, like a week before the Olympics :p

Well, it must be decided next May after the World Champs. The 8 highest ranked teams in the iihf ranking will advance directly to the Olympics and the other teams will have to play qualifiers, for the countries is necessary to know the entire final ranking to know who will host which qualifying tournament and against who. Also the Milano/Cortina 2026 preliminary groups will be determined, so IIHF have basically only 1 year to solve this "freezing" chaos..

and today came a major blow to our Olympic direct quota hopes...

For some reason, believe it or not IIHF awarded :RUS and :BLR ranking points based on their last year IIHF Ranking position (3rd - so 1120 points) even without playing this year at all  BLR got 860 points for 14th place of last year....https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IIHF_World_Ranking

image.png

This is just an unbelievable unfair and completely sad move from IIHF  I understand IIHF want to have :RUS and maybe :BLR back in the elite once that moron in Moscow will finally find his pills and return to reality, I also understand it is not completely fair to punish (all) Russian players by sending them to the lowest possible division (if that war will continue for a couple of years)

But ...  This ais already the second time IIHF is trying to screw our hopes with decisions from behind the ice rinks...

No need to say Slovak fans going all mad in the hockey forum...also Germans obviously since this move de facto send them to the first non-directly qualified provisional place

When Czechoslovakia split, Czechia continued with the ranking of Czechoslovakia and Slovakia got 0 points and got sent to C division, where probably a more fair approach would have been Slovakia getting the same amount of points.
I understand that having Russia return back to A division is better for hockey when we're in times of peace and redemption, but it does put it as a bad precedence given to what happened to Slovakia in the past.

Seriously Fuck off IIHF
