Apparently FIFA will announce a decision on what happens with the Russia vs Poland playoff match scheduled for March 25th later today.

 

Our former FA boss Zbigniew Boniek said yesterday that Moscow is the safest place to play this match like planned but he might keep his mouth shut today.

So Junior World Champs and Short Course World Champs are so supposed to be in Kazan later this year ... I really wish decent countries would step up and host events instead of them having to resort to the likes of Russia.

Interesting breaking news story:

 

The International Olympic Committee has told International Federations to move any events scheduled to take place in Russia or Belarus out of the countries in its strongest condemnation yet of their attack on Ukraine.

Following a meeting of the Executive Board, the IOC has also resolved that no Russian or Belarussian national flags should be displayed at any sporting events.

More follows.

Here is the statement in full:

 

The Executive Board (EB) of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) reiterated today the IOC’s strong condemnation of the breach of the Olympic Truce by the Russian government and the government of Belarus through its support in this. The respective UN resolution was adopted by the UN General Assembly on 2 December 2021 by consensus of all 193 UN Member States. The Olympic Truce began seven days before the start of the Olympic Games, on 4 February 2022, and ends seven days after the closing of the Paralympic Games.

The IOC EB today urges all International Sports Federations to relocate or cancel their sports events currently planned in Russia or Belarus. They should take the breach of the Olympic Truce by the Russian and Belarussian governments into account and give the safety and security of the athletes absolute priority. The IOC itself has no events planned in Russia or Belarus.

In addition, the IOC EB urges that no Russian or Belarussian national flag be displayed and no Russian or Belarussian anthem be played in international sports events which are not already part of the respective World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) sanctions for Russia.

At the same time, the IOC EB expresses its full support to the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) for the upcoming Paralympic Winter Games Beijing 2022.

The IOC EB expresses its deep concerns about the safety of the members of the Olympic Community in Ukraine and stands in full solidarity. It notes that the special IOC task force is in contact with the Olympic Community in the country to coordinate humanitarian assistance where possible.

The IOC EB asks the task force to continue to closely monitor the situation and to keep the IOC EB informed and updated, also with regard to potential amendments of today’s resolution.

I presume the first event to be affected will be the Paralympics, I can not imagine the IPC would disobey this "advice"

      Weightlifting formula is more or less similar to 2020 which was considered terrible by everybody!    this is a tough sport, you can't be in your best shape for too many events. there will be risks of serious injuries this way. with these rules you need 5 good results to qualify. if you bomb out in an event to score a zero you are out of the Olympics unless you replace it with another event. which means most of these poor guys have to participate in 7-8 events (and not just 5) to make up for possible bomb outs.    most importantly if you get injured anytime during this period (almost 2 years) you are out of the Olympics! that's how Sohrab Moradi missed the Tokyo Olympics despite breaking the WR during the qualification period. you can miss the Olympics in 2028 if you get injured late 2026 !  Karlos Nasar couldn't win the Olympic title if we had these rules in 2024   I understand 2024 qualification formula wasn't great either, it had its own flaws but this one is much worse for threatening athletes' health.

      Off to Milan for the 145th session of the International Olympic Committee. Although the agenda has not been published yet, there shouldn’t be any major items over these two days, apart from the election of a member of the IOC Executive Board.
