When do we know all qualified skaters? When will we know if Van der Poel is qualified for men’s 5000 and 10000?

On December 13th we should be 99,9% certain as the final World Cup that counts towards the Olympic Qualification Rankings will finish on December 12th. Everything will be official by December 24th when the ISU will publish it's final provisional quota list. NOCs have to confirm these quotas by January 16th.

However, on the 10k Van der Poel is already 100% certain as the qualification works as follows:

  1. The top 8 in the combined World Cup standings over 5k and 10k after the first 4 World Cup weekends will qualify directly with a maximum of 2 per NOC
  2. The remaining skaters can qualify by skating one of the 4 fastest times over 10k during one of the 4 first World Cup weekends (with no more than 2 quota in total through option 1 and 2 combined per NOC).

Nils will most likely qualify through option 1. However, the only 10k skated during the first 4 World Cup weekends was skated last week and he obliterated the competition by finishing more than 17 seconds in front of #2. So if some miracle happens and he will fall outside of the top 8 in the World Cup standings, he will always qualify based on time.

On the 5k, he is 99,9% certain as the top 14 in the World Cup standings as of mid December will qualify. He is currently ranked #1 with 120 points. In previous seasons, somewhere between 105 - 115 points was sufficient to be in the top 14 after 4 World Cup weekends. If a miracle happens and he falls outside of the top 14, he can still qualify based on time. Besides the top 14, 6 additional skaters will qualify based on season best times skated during a World Cup. Nils currently leads that time ranking, but a 5k will be skated in both Salt Lake City and Calgary, which are the fastest 2 tracks in the world.

Thank you for the explaination . This is hard to understand I think. But now so know better. :thumbup:

Assuming my interpretation of the qualification rules is correct / the ISU didn't change it on us, here are where we stand after round 3 of 4.

23 NOCs, only :NED achieves a maximum quota. Maximum number of skaters is 83, but the max skaters currently add up to 109. Lots of double starters in there, though.

May I know how to determine CHN 6 quotas? After reading document and the example, I still don't get it.

Max number of skaters in a single event (3 in the team pursuit) + 1 skater for each additional event where China has qualified (500m, 1000m, 1500m).

The maximum number of skaters per gender is 7, with two exceptions. If you qualify at least one skater in every event the limit is raised to 8. And if you qualify the maximum number of skaters in all events the limit is raised to 9.

we can already say that Italy would eventually use all of his 8 spots among the men and only 1 among the women (Lollobrigida will skate all the 4 events where Italy have an entry)...

I actually believe Italy could get creative here and select Noemi Bonazza for the mass start. Since Italy is on the reserve list they can claim an additional entry at the games using an athlete that is already qualified for another event (Lollobrigida).

Road to 0 :cheer::(

We were always on the edge but that would really hurt right now ... just at the time when we had the phantasmagoric amount of 2 skaters in the WC, 2 in the Junior WC, a record 6 registered in Inzell earlier this winter ...

France still has a good chance in Timothy Loubineaud, who is currently first under the line in the mass start. If makes the finals in Calgary he should qualify no problems.

But otherwise there doesn't seem to be any prospects for qualifications at these Olympics.

    • Qualification status that could realistically change this week, barring (except where noted) new time qualifying performances :   Men   500m : pretty much done   1000m : pretty much done   1500m : pretty much done   5000m : one outlier at the moment  Semirunniy. He's currently not qualified for the distance being 18/15 in the rankings and R1 time-wise. He could still punch his ticket :    either by getting into the top 15 with a very good result (a podium or even a win would be needed). If it is at the expanse of  Henriksen or, less likely,  Swings, then the loser is out. If it is at the expanse of any other, then  Sasaki is out.  or by hoping Lorello gets into the top 15 at the expanse of Henriksen or Swings. or by going faster than Sasaki (6'08''834) which seems reachable after his 10k, even in Hamar.   10000m : once again Henriksen is on the bubble. If  Maly, Petzold of  Farthofer gets into the top 9 at the expanse of Malfatti or Snellink, then he's out.    Mass-start : not much at stake considering most of the reserve skaters will already receive an additional quota - at the moment    . Morino  will try to enter top 32 and be in those additional quota spots.    Team pursuit : pretty much done   Women   500m : pretty much done   1000m : with  Thorup not cleared to participate one more spot is up for grabs.  Scholz would need to be in front of both Herzog (done as she's not entered) and Czerwonka (7 points) after this final week.  Silaeva would be left out.    1500m : Lamarche not competing and  Zofia Braun being promoted to A division, Poland has got a real shot at a second quota. Braun will need to stay in front of Scholz and Weidemann, who could still finish ahead of her depending on how good Braun fares in A division.  Smedding would suffer from a Polish rise.   3000m : match-up between  Yang and  Horikawa only separated by 3 points. At the moment Yang is out (R2) but if they exchange position in the standings then Horikawa is out (R1). They could also both finish ahead of Hofmann, at the expanse of  Golubeva ultimately.  Jasch has a small shot at a second German quota too, by edging the former two skaters, eliminating them.    5000m : pretty much done   Mass-start :  Santo Rodrigues is hanging on by a thread. The cruelty of it is that those immediately behind her -    - will get an aditional spot anyways, so it does not really matter if they finish in the top 24 ahead of her, except it would allow France to enter a second skater and two girls in the MS.   Team pursuit : three-way asymetrical tie for the last SOQP spot between   and , all in division A. Norway needs to beat both as they can't rely on a time Q, Kazakhstan needs to beat Norway to ensure (if they fail to beat China) the first SOQT spot and avoid the Italian wild-card*, whereas China is pretty safe. *  is currently out but they "only" need to get into a reserve spot to be qualified, which is going faster than 3'00'92 (or faster than Norway if they too decide to skate faster). They were not far off this mark in Hamar earlier this year but the team was in a better shape overall.
