This link works apparently. You just have to replace the dot with .

Had it on for a bit already. The quality seems good. Fingers crossed it keeps working.

Everyone else is toast at Paris.

Only way they have a chance is if she peaks at trials again and can't get back up for Paris.

:USA US Olympic Trials: Day 1

Finals:

Men's 400m Freestyle:

1. Aaron Shackell - 3:45.46 Q

2. Kieran Smith - 3:45.76 Q?

3. David Johnston - 3:46.19

4. Bobby Finke - 3:46.27

5. Luke Whitlock - 3:46.55

6. Jake Magahey - 3:46.89

7. Daniel Matheson - 3:48.63

8. Jake Mitchell - 3:50.76

3 years ago, only one person in the final hit the A standard and there was a time trial to who else would get the 2nd spot. That wasn't an issue this year as the top 5 went under that time. Aaron Shackell is officially the first qualifier on the US team. As a reminder, the 2nd place finisher isn't yet guaranteed a spot on the Olympic team due to the athlete limit so Kieran Smith will have to wait.

Women's 400m Freestyle:

1. Katie Ledecky - 3:58.35 Q

2. Paige Madden - 4:02.08 Q?

3. Jillian Cox - 4:06.89

4. Kayla Han - 4:08.21

5. Aurora Roghair - 4:08.66

6. Anna Peplowski - 4:09.20

7. Leah Smith - 4:09.34

8. Madi Mintenko

Easy win for Ledecky and good time for her. Moves her ahead of McIntosh's time at Canadian Trials and only trails Titmus. Paige Madden has been in great form all year and was my pick to take the 2nd spot here and I'm glad she got that spot. Another thing worth mentioning is that Bella Sims and Claire Weinstein both bombed out in prelims and failing to make the final.

Semi-finals:

Advancing to Women's 100m Butterfly Final:

1. Gretchen Walsh - 55.18 (WR) :hyper:

2. Torri Huske - 55.79

3. Regan Smith - 55.92

4. Alex Shackell - 56.78

5. Claire Curzan - 57.24

6. Emma Sticklen - 57.77

7. Beata Nelson - 57.80

8. Kelly Pash

Should be an easy qualification for Walsh and Huske.

Advancing to Men's 100m Breaststroke Final:

1. Charlie Swanson - 59.34

2. Josh Matheny - 59.42

3. Nic Fink - 59.46

4. Liam Bell - 59.57

5. Jake Foster - 59.63

6. Michael Andrew - 59.65

7. Noah Nichols - 59.76

8. Luke Rodarte - 59.78

Don't think anyone expected Charlie Swanson to contend for a spot in this event. Will be interesting to see if he can keep it up in the final tomorrow. Nic Fink has his hands full.

Qualifiers after Day 1 (4 athletes):

Priority 1: 1st place winners

  • Katie Ledecky - W 400m Freestyle
  • Aaron Shackell - M 400m Freestyle

Priority 2: Top 4 in 100m Freestyle and 200m Freestyle

Priority 3: Other 2nd place finishers (Not guaranteed selection)

  • Paige Madden - W 400m Freestyle
  • Kieran Smith - M 400m Freestyle

Priority 4: 5th place finishers in 100m Freestyle and 200m Freestyle (Not guaranteed selection)

Priority 5: 6th place finishers in 100m Freestyle and 200m Freestyle (Not guaranteed selection)

So :CAN:ITA:USA Santo Condorelli has been ruled ineligible to compete in the US Olympic Trials because his last time competing for Italy is too recent, and his appeal on the matter has been rejected.

Can’t say I feel bad for him.

So, in athletics we know there are super shoes which greatly contribute to the breaking of world records (Kelvin Kiptum, for example, was surely a great athlete, but there is no doubt the shoes played a big part in his marathon WR, like with most recent WR's). What's the thing in swimming that has made world records been broken again and again, year after year?

Are they just on an overall low level, or are there certain equipment developments, or faster pools, or, I don't know, wetter water that makes WR's be broken so often in swimming? :p

Surely it's not just 'athletes get better', because athletes get better in every sport.
