Just goes to show that everyone should wait until it's over. :p

So true! I remember a Serbian friend saying so in 2016 when Djokovic went out early and some of the Serbian teams in team sports (men's water polo, women's basketball, men's basketball) were doing very poorly. They ended up with 8 medals including 4 from team sports.

There’s been one British doomsayer who’s gone very quiet the last couple of days despite talking non stop all week about how this would be a disaster for GB

The race for table no.1 is still on. :CHN leads :USA by 5 golds but nothing is settled yet. Here is the gold medal chances and possibilities for each two nations listed and predicted by me:

:USA

  • Athletics Women's high jump 30%
  • Athletics Women's 4*400 relay 70%
  • Athletics Men's 4*400 relay 70%
  • Golf Women 70%
  • Basketball Men 60%
  • Waterpolo Women 60%
  • Baseball 40%
  • Wrestling Men's 97kg freestyle 30%
  • Basketball Women 90%
  • Volleyball Women 70%
  • Boxing Men's 91+kg 30%
  • Boxing Men's 63kg 30%

Total 31+6.5=37.5

:CHN

  • Canoeing WC2 60%
  • Diving Men's 10m 80%
  • Boxing Women's 69kg 30%
  • Karate Women's 61+kg 50%
  • Wrestling Women's 50kg 30%
  • Boxing Women's 75kg 40%

Total 36+2.9=38.9

So it's very close prediction number and it all depends on capability to realize the possibility. Very interesting for me to chase it.

Sure enough :LTU delivers in modern pentathlon, a totally obscure sport these days. Asadauskaite is 37yo though so they might not count on her in Paris anymore.

He had a habit of predicting disaster before events had even been completed and has been wrong on pretty much every forecast he has made. It's unlikely but with 60 medals so far including two boxing finalists there is still just a route to beating 2016 which would make his head explode.

Yesterday Gracenote said they thought the odds were 60-40 in favour of China based on what's left.

Day 15 will need to be a big day for :USA if they are going to catch :CHN. They'll have a better final day so they don't need to catch them, but they can only really afford to be 1-2 gold medals behind by the end of the day. Team sports and relays will need to lead the way. If China has a good day among the combat sports it might be over.

    • c'mon! stop those idiots! they're trying hard to ruin athletics in almost every aspect (road running, field events, the same cross country that has already been killed in practice)   please, someone shoot to death Coe and his accolades as soon as possible!!!
    • That's only if they don't listen to Trump's 48 hour deadline. But that is permanently 48 hours away, since, well, TACO.
    • I agree NO to Poomsae!!!   I think they plan to introduce 6 weight classes after LA instead of 8 right now, and those 6 should become Olympic instead of current 4 weights. Going forward world and Olympic ranking could be identical.    But it’s not clear if that means more quotas. Having 6 classes with 64 athletes per gender would be a joke. A reasonable taekwondo competition needs at least 16 athletes per weightclass. But I am not sure taekwondo can get another 64 quotas in total, I doubt it.    beside that I am not happy with the newly proposed weight classes, they give much more focus on light weight athletes, which will be an advantage for Asian countries mainly.    if the proposal is accepted the new weightclasses will be:    Female: 46kg, 51kg, 57kg, 63kg,70kg and +70kg    Male: 54kg, 60kg, 67kg,74kg, 82kg, +82kg
