Summer Olympic Games 2020 Medal Count

Should be 2 golds in basketball and 1 in water polo, others are hard to predict.

Also two golds in the 4x400 m relay. China should win gold in men's table tennis and men's 10 m diving? More interesting question for me is who will finish 7th to 10th. I think the Netherlands will finish ahead of Germany and if Italy continues fluking golds in athletics, they might also finish ahead of Germany (in terms of total medals they definitely could). France is a bit disappointing for me, i thought that they would be better just 3 years away from their home olympics.

France will end with less medals this games than Rio which is not the usual trajectory for the next host.

Yes, very disappointing. Not sure in which sports they are supposed to dramatically improve until 2024.

Is :USA still on pace to win the medal table? Because it looks like to me that they have more gold medal chances coming up in the last few days than :CHN and the 5 gold difference isn't that large.

By my "gold medal chance" counter I have the United States winning by 1, but China has a 5 gold lead plus some safer gold medal chances. It'll come down to who can get the most "maybe golds"

At this point I don't know either. :p I will be waiting for the "conclusion" made by every federation after these Games.

:CHN vs :USA Gold Medal Race

Here's a quick overview of the gold medal chances the two nations have going into Day 14 (note I am being generous about their chances)

:CHNChina

Athletics - Women's 20km Walk

Athletics - Women's Javelin Throw

Karate - Women's -61kg

Table Tennis - Men's Team

Wrestling - Women's Freestyle -53kg

:USAUnited States

Athletics - Women's 400m

Athletics - Women's 4x100m Relay

Karate - Men's -75kg

Volleyball - Women's Beach Volleyball

Wrestling - Men's Freestyle -125kg

Interestingly, an even match for Day 14. China has the most secured gold medal (table tennis), but the United States may end the day just edging out China.

Of course there are future gold medal chances at risk going into Day 14, here are the events where the gold medal chance may be extinguished due to an early loss.

:CHNChina

Boxing - Women's Middleweight

Canoeing - Women's C2 500m

Cycling - Women's Individual Sprint

Diving - Men's 10m Platform

Wrestling - Women's Freestyle -50kg

:USAUnited States

Basketball - Women's Tournament

Boxing - Men's Lightweight

Volleyball - Women's Indoor Tournament

Wrestling - Men's Freestyle -97kg

Wrestling - Women's Freestyle -50kg

I suspect there will be some gold medal chances loss between the two nations. Obviously each loss for the United States will make things harder, at the very worst they must match their losses with China.

I just looked at your medals and was shocked to see that you won 8 medals in judo, 3 in sailing and 5 in fencing, so not much potential to improve there. Even 40 medals sounds like a rather optimistic prediction at this point. I wonder if your strength in team sports hurts your individual medal chances, in GB it is the other way round (being almost nonexistant in team sports).

Yes, 4x400 m is good option but USA underperformed in many sports, wouldnt be surprised to see them winning some other medal.

Netherlands should win few more medals in track cycling, should they?

I feel sorry for many German athletes, Unruh, handball team, judokas, shooters, beach volleyball.

    • That's only if they don't listen to Trump's 48 hour deadline. But that is permanently 48 hours away, since, well, TACO.
    • I agree NO to Poomsae!!!   I think they plan to introduce 6 weight classes after LA instead of 8 right now, and those 6 should become Olympic instead of current 4 weights. Going forward world and Olympic ranking could be identical.    But it’s not clear if that means more quotas. Having 6 classes with 64 athletes per gender would be a joke. A reasonable taekwondo competition needs at least 16 athletes per weightclass. But I am not sure taekwondo can get another 64 quotas in total, I doubt it.    beside that I am not happy with the newly proposed weight classes, they give much more focus on light weight athletes, which will be an advantage for Asian countries mainly.    if the proposal is accepted the new weightclasses will be:    Female: 46kg, 51kg, 57kg, 63kg,70kg and +70kg    Male: 54kg, 60kg, 67kg,74kg, 82kg, +82kg
