No Darya Virolaynen in the Russian team? Has she dropped off the boil so badly?
-
Watched the second half on TV. Looks like Irish D forced some key stops to prevent at least two try drives from NZ. I have no idea how strong the NZ team was, maybe they send some back-ups for this Tour?

1. Figure Skating = Krasokorčuľovanie.
kraso from Krása (beauty) and korčuľovanie from Korčuľovať (skating)
Yep Lyžovanie is skiing from the word Lyže (plural) or Lyža (singular) (ski)
2. Yes, you are probably right, weird, because I just found out that I was always wrong about the meaning of her name, but yep I admit to not be any bird specialist though.
Yeah, I'm familiar with the word "krasne". Would have never guessed the second part though.
Btw, this is a Polish "lyzwa", not exactly your "lyza"

Or some Danish words.....Speciallægepraksisplanlægningsstabiliseringsperiode.
I once asked a Finnish poster on some other forum about Krista Lahteenmaki's name and he said it meants "Tree by the lake" IIRC
Would need a reminder on that if we have some Finnish posters here

nope. r is r. Slovak pronounciation is easy, because everytime you have to read all letters in the word, so if there a "r" you have to read it, but if there not, so you don´t.
It´s VLHOVÁ
you can hear the correct pronunciation in this tv shot. I know, it´s hard when you understand nothing, but I am pretty sure you´ll notice her name, they mention it many times in this video
I always find it funny lyzovanie means skiing in Slovakian/Czech because a very similar sounding word "lyzwiarstwo" means skating in Polish. I had no idea how you call figure skating then
Vlhova's masculine form is Vlha though, right? Therefore I looked up the oriole.

I see that Vlha means 'oriole' in English? This is what her name comes from? It's perhaps a little less complicated than those Finnish names

Poor performance for Gisin, that's sad
(No comment for the usual italian debaclè in the technical events)
At least Costazza finished both runs

I remember the old Zandvoort F1 races, 1983 was probably the best of them when Piquet & Prost tangled in a forgotten incident so I know how that last corner looked like. It was the old Parabolica-like at Monza.
I last watched a DTM race there ca. 2012-2013 and yeah, Tarzan is still the best overtaking spot for modern cars IMO.

There's a rather sharp divide here about Zandvoort vs Assen, but I'm very firmly in the Zandvoort camp
(nothing against Assen, but F1 wouldn't be great for the track and the MotoGP racing there)
I'd rather settle for Zandvoort myself though that's old school track too. Do they still have that big sweeping bend in the final corner that leads to the S/F line? That could offer some passing into Turn 1. Tunnel Oost has the chicane put there like in the 80s? So it's no longer the killer corner? I didn't watch any races on Zandvoort for a while and missed this season's DTM round there so I don't recall exactly if they did some upgrades lately.

Miami, Vietnam, 2020 is going to be full...I wonder if they will actually happen since nothing is confirmed yet
Meanwhile in the Netherlands the battle has been big in recent years (especially since Max Verstappen's entry) between Assen and Zandvoort and finally there seems to be news....according to a prince, who owns the historic Zandvoort track, Formula One Management has made an offer and if they sign it (costs are 30-40 million euros) the Grand Prix of the Netherlands will be back after 35 years in 2020, in Zandvoort
https://www.telegraaf.nl/sport/2752533/formule-1-kiest-voor-zandvoort
That'd be so freaking awesome, I love Zandvoort. Assen is cool too, but for motorbikes mostly, Zandvoort is one of the most charming tracks in the world, hidden in the dunes and right by the sea.
Assen would be horrible for car racing, it's too narrow with too many chicanes to make it exciting for F1. It's like mixing Catalunya & modern Imola together. It works for bikes which don't have issues with the aero slipstreaming F1 is unable to deal with over the past several years.

Money talks, rich will only get richer. The only real issue is trying to ban club players from NT duty. That shit won't make it past FIFA and the fans.

Simone Biles wins her 10th gold medal in individual events at a WCH. This makes her the most winning female gymnast in individual events, beating Svetlana Khorkina (9).
The difficulty tarriff probably won her the gold already before she even took the vault?

Chineses are technecally great but not elegant that's why she failed
That's been the case since like forever, Chinese system producing robots, now it's spreading everywhere, power gymnastics has killed the artistic part. It's like going by the PFF numbers to see that Alex Smith is #1 ranked QB. Fuck that, I'll have Rodgers or Brady
-
Herein lies the problem, the code is ALL that matters. It's like PFF ranking system in the NFL. Today's gymnastics is like robotics, Execution is deemed irrelevant because of the technical score. It's downright crazy and very unenjoyable.

Not really that as much as Biles doing ridiculous stuff. Difficulty of her vault was 1.00 higher than anyone else's. That's one fall cancelled out right there.
Yeah, Maroney won Olympic silver while landing flat on her ass. Difficulty tarriff tops common sense in modern gymnastics. Not a fan.

This must be piss-poor era for gymnastics. AA champion with two falls and it's still deserved

Is there any sport that heywoodu doesn't follow?

Yeah, he was the last more or less famous ski jumper, after his retirement we had one more guy competing here and there in World Cup/Continental Cup/FIS Cup Tomáš Zmoray, but his biggest success was qualifying from qualifiers to the first round in Vancouver 2010 large hill event, he decided to retire few seasons back, he was still young, but looking at the situation in this sport here, he had to gave up.
The Czechs have at least infrastructure and they always will have some depth among youth categories, so they still will have high level competitors
Hmm.. I've read that Harrachov is basically out of order unless they renovate it and I don't know what's cooking at Liberec?

We can make a deal if your Ski Jumping B team will be really for sale
Right now we have 0 athletes in this sport
only 3 still very young girls apparently are trying it
Well, Czech Republic also went down the ski jumping gutter even quicker than Finland. This sport has become even more elusive than before. The fruit is hanging as low as it ever did. Don't remember any Slovakians in ski jumping since Martin Mesik (sp?) tbh.
-
Not surprising. His injuries were like from a plane crash survivor or something.

Buddy, do you wanna start comparing the Ski Jumping situation on the both sides of the Tatras ?
Ski jumping is exception from the rule in Poland. However when Stoch, Zyla co. hang up their skis we can drop to the levels of Finland where any Top 30 placing will be a reason for success. We've wasted one generation already as our B team is errupting in flames. We don't have any staying power from boys born in the late 90s. Okay, this isn't a ski jumping thread but it's a really low-hanging fruit compared to alpine skiing.
We have ONE senior member in the alpine skiing team (Maryna G-D). The men's team has been disbanded and we have a bunch of no-name juniors. Maciej Bydlinski was told he's too old to be provided for by our fed and retired at age 28. He's an Eurosport expert now. Our most famous slalom piste at Nosal hasn't been renovated since the 1980s. We're lucky it hasn't been closed down despite various rumours over the years. Jasna is like a Rolls compared to this joint
-
Well, the Jasna complex has to provide some depth
Poland is like back in the stone age compared to Slovakia. Hell, every single infrastructure or renovation is funded by the Slovakians on our side of the border already

Stafford hasn't had a great season tbh. It's not like he throws some fringe guys open which usually makes the difference between top teams.
