  1. Barty asked to be removed from the WTA rankings so we'll have a new #1 on the April 4th edition. Iga Swiatek only needs to beat Golubic in Miami R2 to be guaranteed of that. If she doesn't then Paula Badosa would have to win the whole tournament to be #1. I'd say there's 98% chance Swiatek will be the next WTA #1.

  2. The extremely long ski jumping season finally ends this weekend in Planica but the quals have been postponed after Jan Hoerl lost his balance on the inrun in training. They have no frozen tracks in Planica and well, the last weekend of March is technically spring even in Slovenia so the tracks began to melt down

American sport in general is very strange in that lots of people do alpine, cross-country, mountain biking, canoeing etc etc without being in the least interested in the professional version of those sports.  Even in athletics this year we saw that USATF has to include high school races in the middle of international meets in order to get a stadium  audience

I assume NCAA supports indoor sports which helps to boost some of these winter events. Practicing half-pipe tricks isn't much different than gymnastics but canoeing or alpine skiing are outdoor sports so a different story. The lack of depth is probably linked to the decline of escaping poverty through sports. The same happens in boxing or combat sports in general. I presume all cycling-related hype died after the Lance Armstrong scandal.

Apparently Shiffrin made about three million dollars in sponsorship in 2021, so almost half a million dollars in prize money isn't pocked change for her.

Shiffrin isn't very well known in :USA though, alpine skiing is extremely niche outside of regions that have a big ski industry. It's a sport that's relegated to a second rate streaming service the vast majority of the time, so outside of the Olympics alpine skiers are almost unknown to 99% of the country.

Yeah, I'm well aware alpine skiing is a niche sport in USA, they seem to focus on some of these freestyle skiers instead. I bet they are throwing money at Chloe Kim left, right and center even though half-pipe has literally zero genuine competition IMO. Talk about excelling at a low-hanging fruit.
