For Chinese table tennis players, world no.1 is not a guarantee for participating Olympics though 2 quotas available. World ranking is just for reference, head coach have the final say to choose which 2 players to play. In Rio current women world no.1 Liu Shiwen failed to participate single event but luckily she was on team event.

yes being a top Chinese table tennis player is just the start and you have to go through hell to be selected  :d  (even though that automatically means an Olympic medal at least)

but I was talking about sports that award quotas based on world ranking. in TT it's up to NOCs to pick their own team.

Yeah, trying to use world rankings for events with more than one weight class is a bad idea. Some events are more competitive than others.

Also, in situations like this where multiple athletes from the same country coule have qualified the quota for their country the NOC should always be allowed to hold national trials IMO.

Update for Karate

There will be 2 more stages to complete the qualification by ranking.

does that mean that the qualifiers in the Olympic classification are no longer qualified?

I think so, the Olympic standing period extended and quotas should be re-competed.

Yes, it does.

Of course, some of them don't need those competitions to guarantee their places in Tokyo. So, we need to take a calculator again. :d

Good news to Gong Li, she almost got the quota before Rabat and Baku both canceled.

But she could get it anyway, the continental quota is almost assured.

"All athletes who qualified for the Olympics in 2020 will remain qualified for 2021" , the IOC had said...

One month later: "Sorry that was a joke haha".
