Multiple Olympic medallist :BLR Aliaksandra Herasimenia (swimming) was sentenced for 12 years in prison for actions against Belarus national security (which is in a nut shell  - speaking badly about Mr. Lukashenko...)

Herasimenia was not present during the trial as since 2020 left Belarus and is very active in neighbouring countries of Lithuania and Poland.

I wish her well, and I hope she can return to her homeland safely one day.

Hopefully she will be safe. Russia has shown that they can get to their "enemies" anywhere, so hopefully Belarus doesn't have the same capabilities.

Exactly when will be Midnight this New Year, it will be 30 years that Czechoslovakia ceased to exist and 2 new independent countries were created.

I found this vintage video from BBC and CNN news from the 1. January 1993 :(

btw, I also learned today, that the very first sport person representing independent Slovakia was Michal Lepko jumping in Garmisch-Partenkirchen 4 Hills Tournament in 1st round the 1st January 1993 the 1st day of Slovakia (what about that) he and Martin Švagerko who jumped just after him, both represented former Czechoslovakia in Oberstdorf 3 days ago and then they were our first athletes who had the flag of Slovakia near to their name in a competition :p

Later in the evening in the Ice Hockey World Juniors a new team under neutral flag named Team Czech Republic and Slovakia beat Japan 14-2. Two days before the team had still its flag and anthem ! One of the biggest WTF in world sport history

A team which started the Tournament on Boxing Day as Czechoslovakia ended the Tourney winning Bronze for a non-existing country anymore ...

This world is crazy

I know there's not really much happiness in regards to Bolsonaro, but with a little over one day of presidency to go, it looks like he has fucked right off to the other Fallen President in Florida for some sort of Sore Loser's New Year's Eve :bye:

The presidental plane left 40 minutes or so ago, presumably of course with Bolsonaro on board (although that hasn't yet been confirmed). Surely it will have nothing to do with legal trouble which might start the literal second he isn't president anymore :p

IIHF today released a nice article talking more about this crazy moment

https://www.iihf.com/en/events/2023/wm20/news/41449/brotherly_but_divided

Because the countries were split during the 1993 IIHF World Junior Championship in Sweden, it caused the IIHF, organizers, the team and its players a trivia-worthy situation.

The team went into the tournament representing Czechoslovakia, with juniors coming from both parts of the country.

The offence was led by David Vyborny, born in the Czech city of Jihlava, and the late Pavol Demitra from the Slovak city of Dubnica, who died in the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl plane crash in September 2011.

The team’s top defender was Jan Vopat from the Czech city of Most. His promising career in the NHL ended early due to a rare skin illness and he started working as an NHL scout in 2005. Frantisek Kaberle just had one point, but kickstarted a long and successful career on the blueline. Igor Murin from the Slovak city of Trencin was the goalie.

After losing to Finland 5-2 and defeating the United States 6-5, the Czechoslovaks lost the third game in Gavle to host Sweden 7-2. A 1-1 tie against Russia on 30 December 1992 was the last international ice hockey game for Czechoslovakia.

When the players gathered for New Year’s Eve, it was not a normal celebration. Although they continued the tournament as one team, the players were suddenly from two different countries from then on.

“That was very tough. At that time, we had a very tight group,” the late Demitra told IIHF.com in an interview published in May 2011. “I remember after the New Year, we’d won a couple of games, and then they didn’t play our national song anymore. That was very weird.”

On 1st January 1993 the same team called “Czech and Slovak Republics” as of that day, defeated Japan 14-2. It continued with wins over Germany (6-3) and Canada (7-4) to end the round-robin event in third place and claim the bronze medals behind Canada with Paul Kariya and host country Sweden with a record-setting Peter Forsberg.

But something was different. The Czechoslovak anthem was not played anymore. Instead the Czech/Slovak team was honoured without a flag and the IIHF anthem was played.

I remember that after we won the bronze medal, everybody sang the Czechoslovak national anthem all together, and that was very special,” Demitra said.

    • so, the 2025 season is officially over, after the World Cup Finals have been completed with the Shotgun events, where (once again!!!) a new format for the final stage of each event has been experimented for the first time (before it becomes a regular feature in the next season)   the new format enlarge the starting field in each event's final stage to 8 shooters and dramatically shortens the number of target shots to decide the placings   the only characteristic remaining is the progressive eliminations principle   now, as written above, 8 shooters make the final, where after only 12 targets the eliminations start: by then, the last 2 shooters must leave the competition (7th and 8th ranked)   after 12 more targets (24 in total), 2 more shooters have to leave the final (5th and 6th ranked)   then, the crazy carousel starts: every 4 targets we have a new elimination  so, after 28 targets, the 4th ranked shooter is done; after 32 targets the bronze medallist is known and after only 36 targets (provided there's no need for a shoot-off), compared to the previous 60, the gold and silver medallists are crowned   I guess the tiktok people with the attention span of a chinchilla have won once again
