Speed Skating at the Winter Olympic Games 2018

I don't know how much you guys are familiar with Harry Potter books and that so-called sport Quidditch but this mass start events remind me of that :d

why ? because in that game, you have to score goals but they don't really matter , because you have to catch the "Golden Snitch" to win the match, (10 pts for each goal and 150 pts for the snitch)

in this mass start. those sprint points are just for fun, after all the top 3 finishers in last lap get the podium :d

The Points Race and Madison events in track cycling follow a similar concept with the "lapping the field > sprint points" rule.

Technically you can catch the golden snitch and still lose if your team is behind by more than 150 points. Mass start does not have that. You might as well make the race into a 2-4 lap race because that's all that matters.

yeah but lapping the whole group is a huge thing in those events and deserves such huge reward.

here they give max 5 pts for each sprint, we have 3 sprints, means max 15. yet they award 60-40-20 for top 3 finishers !!! what's the point of those sprints , they don't change the podium at all. they affect only from the 4th place

so you are telling me that Quidditch rules make more sense than ISU Mass start rules ?:lol: yeah but was supposed to be a rare thing. scoring 15 goals more than your opponent.

You know I had this discussion with my friend (who introduced me to those books and was a die hard fan) million years ago when I was at high school. the whole thing was fiction but the only thing I was questioning was those Quidditch rules. :d  even when I was reading a fiction book I was still a sport fan.

The mass start would be greatly improved if they got rid of the points and make it a couple laps longer.

It was still an entertaining event though, and goven it ads no athletes... meh, I say keep it.

It's almost as if ISU wants to artificially bring more nations into top 10, to make speed skating look better. Top athletes are always going to ignore those intermediate sprints, leaving everything to those who don't think they could win a medal in the final sprint, but would like to achieve a top finish nevertheless...

    • I`m a traditionalist and I like alpine skiing competitions in the morning hours, illuminated by the sun In ski jumping this is practically non-existentthis in contrast the early 21st century (It's nice that at least there's Planica at the end of every season). There are also traditional competitions under artificial lights, like in Schladming or Madonna di Campiglio. There's no need to do the same thing everywhere as in ski jumping. Alpine skiing finals are rarely super exciting, because usually everything is clear and the skiers are tired from the long season. Finals were often canceled, so this year it was okay for me. If someone wanted a spectacle, that's what the Olympics Games or the World Cup in Kitzbuchel.

    • Baffling scheduling again. It's like FIS want to drive people away.    It's the Finals, on paper your big conclusion to the season, yet it feels like "let's get this over with". Just compare how the ATP treat their finals with this.   Ok, you want to have the GS & SL on Tuesday/Wednesday. That's fine, i've been advocating for more mid-week starts to begin with. But why, oh why do you have them in the middle of the day, on a work week.  Why aren't you having them in the evening, in prime time, when people are off work. Make it a big special event, which people want to visit and not during the day in front of a 100 fans. It's not that hard to choose a place with some floodlights.     And even this week we don't have Champion League football, so the night is free from big competition. Perfect opportunity to have alpine skiing on TV right now, but noooo.
