Approved by whom, exactly? Because these four hubs don't seem to be Chinese government mandated or something, but specifically for the Olympics. I can imagine for example the IOC/organizers have people at those four hubs to perform certain pre-checks or something.

By the Orangizing Committe I would assume.

How so? Were the North Koreans medal threats?

Not really - British sense of humour.  They sometimes have decent skaters.

Interesting, I wouldn't have expected there to be a total of four approved airports one day (because the information about four airports being allowed was shared only two days ago), and a huge list of others not two days later :p

I hope Kazakhstan will send their athletes to Beijing.

And remember Almaty bid lost to Beijing by a very slim margine: 40-44.

So imagine everybody could be just preparing to go there right now...

Kazakhstan should have been selected.

And I highly doubt there would have been any riots now if they had got selected. The IOC takes some of the blame here. :p

My information is from end of December and is directly from the OC.

No, Oslo should have been selected.  But the IOC and their miles long list of demands scared them off.  The IOC deserves all of the blame here for that.  Plus, it's not like the situation in Kazakhstan is that great right now.  Obviously almost anything would be preferable to China, but that wouldn't have been a much better option

Almaty is the one who put in a good bid. Probably the last good bid for the Winter Olympics.

Oslo did nothing.

If Oslo had stuck around and was in the final vote, they would have beaten Almaty running away with it.  Almaty had a very good bid which is why they came so close to beating Beijing, but it's still in a smallish Central Asian country that is dealing with political issues right now.

    • Meant to ask this during the Olympics, but how many of you non-USA peeps are familiar with this song?  In case you don't know, this was written for the LA84 games by John Williams, renowned film score composer (Star Wars, Superman, Jurassic Park, etc.).  NBC now uses this all the time in their Olympic promos, intros, etc.   I had a friend who moved from the US to England, and when the Olympics came on, he commented that he missed this song.  So, perhaps this song is unknown to non-USers...but I have a sneaky suspicion that you Olympics nerds might have heard it.         Another one NBC uses (though I just learned myself that this was originally by French-American Leo Arnaud, called Bugler's Dream, dating back to the 1964 Tokyo games...apparently in 1996, John Williams combined it with Olympic Fanfare):      The combined version:   Edit: I'm hoping to make it to an athletics session at LA28 so I can be in the stadium where he directed the orchestra to perform this song during the Opening Ceremony.  Williams is still alive, and at 94, I hope he can hang in there two more years to see the Olympics return to LA and receive some honor.  He also composed music for Atlanta '96, and the opening theme of Summon the Heroes also gets used by NBC a lot:
