I wonder if instead of having flexibility around what sport to add there should be one or two team sports per game with an expanded field (of 16 or 32 or w/e) where the host gets to pick which which team sports (if any) has an expanded field. -

I don't buy that she's doing this just to start the race if she thinks she won't be competitive. We'll probably know more after the training run and far be it from me to know how that's going to work with a torn ACL, but if she knows she can't do it, she'll give that spot to another skier -
And this with relatively small fields, so lots of nations with no skin in the game. -
It is by far the biggest ticket sales of any sport at the Olympics - even 70% full stadia means about 58 matches with 30-40,000 odd crowds - even the athletics rarely sells that many tickets (usually across 18 sessions full to the brim, the equivalent of about 36 matches of 30-40,000.) and no sport other than track and field comes close. Moreover, it tends to create an easy win for 'spreading' the Olympic bounty, and rarely requires any meaningful new build, unlike Athletics. You are talking, when you add in VIp ticket sales and the usual venue add ons, generating revenue in the $200-300 million range - Revenue which, unlike most of the money from the Games (TV rights, sponsorship, branded merch), goes to the host organiser, not the IOC. The thing about being an Olympic fanatic is that we often get here precisely because we rejected to some extent or other the overwhelming soccer culture that exists everywhere outside North america and the antipodes. So we aren't Olympic football's target audience. Casual fans who like football - of whom there are a LOT - are. I do wonder, in all sincerity, if Brisbane might be better doing this with cricket than soccer - or if LA would have been better doing it with baseball.

Really wonder about competing when it can cause long term damage and you hopefully have another 40-50 years to live... but I guess in Vonn's case, her knees have been butchered so much already, that's already baked in, so that the heck -
Mirko Lazareski has been replaced by Viktor Petkov. The former one's sample came positive and he's temporarily suspended. -
Plus after so long of competing for Lithuania, one might obviously assume she speaks the language by now at the very least to some extent. Cool choice! -
At first I thought it was an interesting choice considering there could have been multiple choices of Lithuanian-born athletes, but upon reflection she represented Lithuania for a decade now and won continental medal, she was denied Olympics 2 times already due citizenship laws, and she was finally granted citizenship on the grounds of merit and also passing her citizenship exam. She's probably the most recognised olympian by the public in Lithuania this year. I saw her competing in Europeans few weeks ago in Sheffield and she truly made a lot of effort to greet Lithuanian fans, gave shout outs to the Lithuanian flags while waiting for the judge scores and engaged so much with the fans. So I'm not really mad at the choice, she truly deserves it.
