Ledecky finally might have found a worthy competitor and it’s a 14 yo girl from Canada. There is no question that she will qualify for the Olympics, the only question is how many events she will qualify in. My guess is that she will qualify in 4 individual events + the 800 free relay and she might very well become this Olympic Games Penny Oleksiak (although in other events). Canada is really blessed in women’s swimming, it would be great if Germany could learn from them.

Might be an interesting question/quiz:

Will she be the youngest medalist at the Olympics? I think she has a realistic chance, unless there is some younger girl in skateboarding, but obviously winning a medal in swimming would be far more impressive.

there are younger girls in Skateboarding who are locked medals...actually, the whole podium in women's Park could well be under-14...:yikes:

There was a small high performance meet in Toronto for swimmers based there. Here are some key results:

Men:

Finlay Knox, 20, broke the NR in the 200im, swimming to a 1:58.88.

Women:

Summer McIntosh, 14, smashed an age group record in the 200m, 1:57.65, beating the prior time set by Taylor Rock at 2:00.52.

Maggie MacNeil/Rebecca Smith/Kayla Sanchez all had personal bests in the 100m, which bodes well for the 4x100 relay.

However, some troubling results too for ex. Taylor Ruck was only 5th in the 100m

New junior world record in men’s 200 free with 1:44.96 for 18 year old Hwang Sunwoo from South Korea. The men’s 200 free at the Olympics could be super quick, there are at least 10 guys who are capable of going sub 1:45 (2 Americans, 2 australians, Dean, Scott, Rapsys, Hwang, Yang, maybe some Russians, Matsumoto).

    • North American rugby quotas ( and qualified automatically)    M: and W: and
    • I remember Caroline Golubitsky. She competed with Vezzali for a while but not for long. Rita Konig, whom Vezzali defeated in the final of the Olympic Games in 2000, was more famous, as well as Sabine Bau and Anja Mueller. From what I remember, the Germans competed fiercely with us at some point, but they almost always lost.
    • Shemyakina won a bronze medal in 2014 Worlds and was one of our leader but leave the squad due to pregnancy (she has 2 daughters if I'm not mistaking, so she chose family instead of sport). And speaking of foil we have back in the day Sergiy Golubitskyi, who was Olympic silver medalist and won some medals in other competitions and coached his wife Caroline Golubitskyi - one of the German foil specialists. Even in women's foil we had medal in Women's foil at the European championship - it was Olha Leleiko, our current national coach. So no, we are pretty good fencing country, and depending on generations of our athletes some events are more "profitable" for us and some don't.
    • Shemyakina that was a very strange story. She unexpectedly won the games but before and after she literally achieved nothing. After that success in 2012 she also completely disappeared. It's only in epee that such strange situations. That's why I've always preferred foil and sabre, because the top was more stable there, although that's changing now. The competition has grown a lot all over the world.
