FISA congress coming to the end. Biggest drama of course was the proposal fro Tokyo 2020 programme. The results:

a) FINA proposal - Replace LM4- with W4- - 94 votes

b) AUS, CHN, DEN, SUI (and CAN) proposal - Replace M4- with LW4- - 67 votes

Yay, finally less lightweight boats in Olympics. Of course it still will have to be confirmed by IOC.

Other new resolutions:

  • Paralympic course upgraded from 1 km to 2 km
  • Gender of coxswain won't matter any more. This means that in Olympics a men coxswain can be in W8+ team or a lady coxswain in M8+ team. Only requirement for coxswain is to weight at least 55 kg.

Sarasota, Florida is supposed to host World Championships in two weeks... Looks like it might get cancelled considering the weather.

Jean-Christophe Rolland, President of the World Rowing Federation (FISA), has signalled a potentially bleak future for lightweight rowing at the Olympics.

At the FISA Extraordinary Congress in February, Rolland helped persuade the membership to reach the gender equality required by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) by dropping the lightweight coxless men's four from the Games programme in favour of a women's coxless four.

This left only the men's and women's double sculls as lightweight Olympic events at Tokyo 2020.

But as the 47th World Rowing Championships get underway in Florida - helping to mark FISA's 125th anniversary - Rolland has admitted that lightweight rowing may not have an Olympic future beyond Tokyo. :(

Not much of a surprise. He has long shown disinterest in lightweight rowing (and it seems like IOC aren't too fond of it as well).

That's terribly sad for the universality of the sport.
