I'm 99% sure Belgium will just use times luckily, no hassles with trials and having to peak another time and so on.

These Belgians are listed as officially qualified on their NOC's website:

Apart from that, their selection criteria since this year are the exact same as the international standards.

Thanks, not too surprised about Belgium

As a reminder the Canadian Trials are also the New Zealand trials for swimmers studying in North America. So far Corey Main in the men's 100m backstroke and Matt Hutchins in the men's 400m freestyle have qualified and will be added to the team.

Day 3 of the Canadian trials saw 6 swimmers qualify.

Ashton Baumann - Men's 200m breaststroke

Ryan Cochrane - Men's 400m freestyle

Kennedy Goss/Katerine Savard - Qualified for the women's 4x200m relay (McLean/Oleksiak already qualified swimmers will swim the individual 200 m)

Rachel Nicol/Kierra Smith in the 100m breaststroke.

So far 13 swimmers have qualified.

Big surprised to see Ashton Baumann make the team. He wasn't on form over the last two years. If his sister also makes the team CBC is going to have a field day being all nostalgic over Alex Baumann.

Baumann was injured the last 2 years.

Just an intriguing question, how do we know if these swimmers have already been qualified and selected? Distinguish between CRIT and Crit.

CRIT = Qualified to the Individual discipline

crit. = qualified because of the Relay, but without the OQT for the Individual race yet

by the way, at page 3 you listed the Italian National Champs from May 5th through 8th, but actually they will be held between April 19th through 23rd...;)

CRIT is for athletes who reached the qualifying standard in distances in which there are not more than the maximum number of athletes qualified.

Crit* is for athletes who reached the qualifying standard, but in distances in which more than the maximum have done so (in practice this only means the men's 200m freestyle with 3 athletes who reached the standard)

Japan literally set a new national record in the men's and women's 100m freestyle yet neither swimmer will go to Rio because they didn't reach the Japanese standard.

So what's the record? :p

Or you mean it has never happened before that Japan isn't represented in the 100 free?

    • Weightlifting formula is more or less similar to 2020 which was considered terrible by everybody!    this is a tough sport, you can't be in your best shape for too many events. there will be risks of serious injuries this way. with these rules you need 5 good results to qualify. if you bomb out in an event to score a zero you are out of the Olympics unless you replace it with another event. which means most of these poor guys have to participate in 7-8 events (and not just 5) to make up for possible bomb outs.    most importantly if you get injured anytime during this period (almost 2 years) you are out of the Olympics! that's how Sohrab Moradi missed the Tokyo Olympics despite breaking the WR during the qualification period. you can miss the Olympics in 2028 if you get injured late 2026 !  Karlos Nasar couldn't win the Olympic title if we had these rules in 2024   I understand 2024 qualification formula wasn't great either, it had its own flaws but this one is much worse for threatening athletes' health.
