Swimming Discussion | Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 Road to LA 2028

I think Bierdamann's 200 free is his last world record standing, hopefully Popovici gets it soon (unfortunately he had to retire today from Romanian Nationals after a promising 47.30 in the prelims cause of back pains).

Hmm, this seems rather ..... unusual swim from a European in mid-April. :dunno:

He's often fast in April.

:ITA Spring Nationals, Day #1

men's 50m back: in Ceccon's absence, 2 youngsters dominated the field...Christian Bacico (2005) won the title and improved himself up to 24.83

Daniele Del Signore (2007) ended up in second place with 25.21

women's 800m free: always only Simona Quadarella...8.24.25 for her, just enough to win the title and earn herself the official ticket to the world champs next Summer

men's 200m fly: Alberto Razzetti easily won the race in 1.55.06 (only 7/100 outside the qualifying time), but he said he's not feeling well at all and he's worried about the next days and races

women's 100m breaststroke: the race of the championships in day #1. despite Benedetta Pilato gave up the final after a poor heat performance, we already have both world champs qualifiers: Anita Bottazzo won the title with a huge PB in 1.05.82, followed by Lisa Angiolini in 1.06.01. Arianna Castiglioni ended up in 3rd place and therefore she's gonna miss the world champs (at least in this race) despite a good 1.06.22

men's 400m free: Marco De Tullio easily won the race in 3.46.90. Summertime sadness (cit.) for a race that was always so successful for our Country and now it's one of the poorest

women's 400m IM: Anna Pirovano won in 4.40.77, which is her PB, but also a depressing time considered that she was just a few tenths of a second outside the old NR at the 300m mark and finished almost 7 seconds shy of said record (still held by Alessia Filippi since Beijing 2008)

men's 50m free: Leonardo Deplano destroyed the field, took the title home and earned the official ticket to Singapore with 21.62. all the remaining swimmers were above the 22" mark.

finally, in the women's club 4*100m relay, Sara Curtis swum her new PB over the distance in the first leg, she improved by half a second up to 53.72 (and she could have gone faster, if didn't "die" in the last 5/10 meters)

if she can repeat herself in the final of the individual race, this would be a qualifying time for the world champs

:ITA Spring Nationals, Day #2

sleepy and somehow disappointing day in Riccione...until the last individual race of the day, when the unthinkable happened: the next big thing in Italian swimming revealed herself well earlier than expected :yikes:

Alessandra Mao, in fact, despite being only 14 (not even sure she already turned 14, actually), won the National title over the women's 200m freestyle in 1.58.86 :hyper:

given that she basically doesn't have a decent start nor turns and she's not doing any power training in the gym yet, I hope (and think) she has room to become a world star in the next few years

Today's other champions:

women's 50m back: Sara Curtis, 27.90

men's 50m fly: Lorenzo Gargani, 23.32

women's 100m fly: Costanza Cocconcelli, 58.04

men's 100m breastroke: Nicolò Martinenghi, 59.16 (world champ qualifying time...good to see the Olympic champion back on track, despite not in his best shape both mental and physical); in the same race, Ludovico Blu Art Viberti slept big time in the morning heats and was forced to swim in the B Final, which he won in 59.04 (but since he didn't do it in the A final, the time is not accepted as a world qualifier for now)

women's 200m breaststroke: Francesca Fangio, 2.23.67 (only 7/100 of a second outside the world champs qualifying time)

men's 100m back: Christian Bacico, 53.61

Sara Curtis :ITA improved her 100 free PB to 53.57 in the heats

let's see if finally she can improve Pellegrini's record (53.18) later Tonight...

it's gonna be difficult (given that her PB was 54.22 until last Sunday, when she went down to 53.72 in the relay), but not impossible :fingers:

meanwhile, Alessandra Mao paid the prize of Yesterday's emotions and media attention and this morning she swum only the 16th time in the heats of the 100m free  (still, she improved her PB by more than a second, from 57.54 to 56.52)

    • It's all hogwash especially in the short attention span generation. Like nobody cares about Free Tibet anymore either. Free Palestine will last a lot longer due to Saudi Arabia becoming a sponsorship force in sports.   Israel is too weak in soccer to qualify from UEFA zone. The only time they qualified was from the Asian zone and they only beat Australia & New Zealand who were complete nobodies in the 1960s. No such luck in the 60 years since.
    • Oh I assure you FIFA dodger a bullet with Israel not qualifying…   But ya that’s kind of the thing, shut up and dribble is a mantra anti LGBT people have used often. I don’t think it’s hypocritical to remind them of their position
    • Ah, yes but that's not how pro athletes are taught in North America these days? Shut up & dribble is xenophobic, racist or whatever? The hypocrisy of some of these policies were exposed during 2022 World Cup already where the Saudis played it smart and waved their own "Free Palestine' slogans. Forget LGBT rights for a moment, how many 'Free Palestine' flags will be waved in 2026? Or will those be confiscated by default? Somehow I feel this won't be met with similar backlash when China clamped down on 'Free Tibet' in 2008 OG. Saudi Arabia is more important to global markets than Iran & Egypt
    • Wisła Płock just assumed 1st position after five consecutive draws. Must be first time ever a team on a five match winless streak actually moves up to league top.
    • Well ya, which is why the Egyptian and Iranian teams can shut up and dribble :P
    • The problem is, the World Cup is not a local event. Overall it's another storm in a teacup. LGBT rights in Muslim countries won't change a damn inch becuse of one soccer match in Seattle
    • After looking at the entry list of athletes in the official website, I've changed some of my predictions in the Olympic events with these changes:   Total Tally: Thailand 87, Singapore 51, Vietnam 48, Indonesia 33, Philippines 24, Malaysia 22, Cambodia 1     Badminton (5): Malaysia 2, Thailand 1, Singapore 1, Indonesia 1   Men’s Singles: Switched from Thailand to Singapore     Boxing (11): Thailand 8, Philippines 2, Vietnam 1   Men: -54 kg (-55 kg): Thailand, -60 kg: Thailand, -63.5 kg (-65 kg): Thailand, -69 kg (-70 kg): Thailand, -80 kg: Philippines   Women: -50 kg (-51 kg): Thailand, -54 kg: Thailand, -57 kg: Thailand, -60 kg: Vietnam, -66 kg (-65 kg): Thailand, -70 kg: Philippines     Sailing (7): Thailand 4, Singapore 2, Malaysia 1   ICLA 6: Switched from Thailand to Malaysia     Taekwondo (8): Thailand 6, Vietnam 2   -67 kg: Switched from  Vietnam to Thailand     Weightlifting (5): Thailand 2, Philippines 1, Indonesia 1, Malaysia 1   Men: -65 kg: Malaysia, -94 kg (-95 kg): Thailand   Women: -53 kg: Thailand, -69 kg: Philippines, -77 kg: Indonesia   * I saw that they have actually change the weight categories to almost match that of IWF newly introduced categories from several months ago.      Wrestling (12): Vietnam 7, Philippines 3, Indonesia 2   Men's Freestyle: -57 kg: Philippines, -65 kg: Vietnam, -74 kg: Vietnam, -86 kg: Philippines Men's Greco-Roman: -67 kg: Indonesia, -77 kg: Vietnam, -87 kg: Indonesia, -97 kg: Vietnam Women's Freestyle: -50 kg: Vietnam, -53 kg: Vietnam, -57 kg: Vietnam, -62 kg: Philippines
