Damn, I messed up the bronze medals awarded on a different day. At this point, Japan's count should also be in question, all others are correct. Thanks for pointing that out, after these Olympics anyway I'll put all the data on the strip, which I recently started collecting (and which are only 100% correct up to the Berlin Olympics).

How do you decide which day is actually counted? I am thinking in cases like boxing or volleyball - Poland has a medal in boxing guaranteed since Sunday, but still it is not decided what colour. Does it mean for your stats that it counted for Sunday (that would have very interesting consequences, because no medal would ever be counted for the final days since the four medalists would be known well before)? If our boxer had lost yesterday and was awarded bronze would you have counted it for Wednesday? Or is the day when the medals are physically awarded the actual date?

Btw. if you have already collected a larger database, maybe you could also run a query on an average number of athletes and events to win a medal per nation? It would be very interesting to compare such figures for a few countries like South Korea (who must have an insanely good fulfillment quote looking at their medals and the squad size), South Africa (who deliberately refuse some quotas due to lack of competitiveness) and so on

This came up yesterday on the British Forum.  It seems that in the Official Table boxing bronzes DO count on the day of fight, because they cannot get any better, A gold/silver matchup is NOT counted until the result of the Final is known, because they don't know what colour the medal will be.

With Canoeing and Boxing gold, China should end with 36 Gold medals. Without those 2 and all the favs they win they should get to 34.

 

Considering they got 2 weightlifting events taken away from them, they are on pace to equal what they did in Tokyo.
