Definition of winter sports: sports performed on snow or ice.

How can a journalist who has covered seven Olympic Games write "and then there’s basketball. Professional basketball is also a winter sport. But it’s part of the summer Olympics"  ?

Exactly. Who cares about the conventions of professional level sports? "Normal" people play basketball/football/running on summer, hockey/skiing/ice skating on winter. Let's keep it at that.

Luckily, this seems to be only some ridiculous blog or whatever.

Classic article from north american journalist that thinks the world revolves around NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB...

Lets move some different sports arbitrarily from Summer to Winter Olympics to make space for Ice Hockey in Summer Olympics. Who cares if these sports have well defined calendars which takes into account Olympics. Important thing is NHL fans should be able to enjoy NHL for 10 months and have a good chance of medal in Olympics.

Why on earth would normal people play an indoor sport like basketball in summer? :d (indoor in the professional level)

Well, I don't care because I wouldn't play it anyway, but when thinking about playing basketball I think about playing indoor and that would fit in a winter schedule :p

You are saying that most children play basketball indoors in their free time? No way Jose. :p

Winter is too cold for such activities.

I have no idea where children play basketball in other parts of the world :p

I know here at school for example we'd play stuff like basketball and other indoor activities during the winter, whereas in summer we'd be out on the field doing, well, stuff on the field :d
