Asian Games 2022

The North Korean 49kg weightlifter just appear out of nowhere, take the gold and break the WR. I think other categories may also repeat this fantasy. Not sure how IWF and IOC will handle their Olympics qualification. From my point of view, they are not constantly attending requiring tournaments and not being timely monitored doping status. So according to the qualification document, they should not be granted quotas.

They can’t qualify as per IWF rule book. They didn’t participate in the mandatory world championships , so are not eligible fir quota places.

We all know that the IOC are going to make an exception here.

no, they won't

the only exceptions will be made for Russians and Belarussians in those disciplines that have only a long Oltympic Qualification Period they couldn't attend for a long while to

no favours to :PRK as they're excluding themselves from the international scene by their own decision

But for the athletes, competing in Paris 2024 doesn't really matter...

Chinese weightlifters, beware. They have been locked out for 3 years and now all they're hungry for a new apartment unit in Pyongyang

I disagree, the desire of Thomas Bacholympicchampionfencing1976 to appear as the International Champion of Peace will always win over any so-called rules.

We have reached the half-way point of the Asian Games. Let's see which nations are performing better/worse relative to 2018. Here's a medal table comparison between events which were held in both 2018 and 2022 (including esports).

Unsurprisingly, China as host nation is doing better relative to 2018. Most of this is due to their performance in swimming where they gained 8 total medals. On the opposite end, Japan's poor performance in the pool (-22 medals relative to 2018) is the reason they are on the bottom. Previous host Indonesia is down 10 medals while Thailand, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Chinese Taipei are also down.

Uzbekistan has had a great games so far. Recently they have been courting ex-Russian athletes which has only hasten since the war began. Hong Kong, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates have seen some decent gains too.

Let's take a look at who has benefited the most from the new (as in events not in 2018) events. In total 42 events have so far taken place that weren't in 2018.

  Gold Silver Bronze Total
:CHN China 17 11 4 32
:IND India 5 5 3 13
:KOR South Korea 5 4 10 19
:PRK North Korea 3 3 1 7
:THA Thailand 3 2 5 10
:KAZ Kazakhstan 3 2 0 5
:TPE Chinese Taipei 2 2 2 6
:JPN Japan 1 2 2 5
:UZB Uzbekistan 1 2 2 5
:SGP Singapore 1 2 1 4
:IRI Iran 1 1 0 2
:HKG Hong Kong 0 2 1 3
:QAT Qatar 0 1 1 2
:KUW Kuwait 0 1 0 1
:MAC Macau 0 1 0 1
:SRI Sri Lanka 0 1 0 1
:INA Indonesia 0 0 4 4
:VIE Vietnam 0 0 4 4
:AFG Afghanistan 0 0 1 1
:BAN Bangladesh 0 0 1 1
:KGZ Kyrgyzstan 0 0 1 1
:MAS Malaysia 0 0 1 1
:MGL Mongolia 0 0 1 1

China tops the table, but India, South Korea and Thailand all had double digit medal gain. Does that mean China is stacking the event? Not really, China is by far the strongest nation so it's expected they would have the most medals. From a percentage point of view, the medals from the new events account for 16.4% of the total medals yet China's medals from the new event only account for 14.8% of their total medals so they are at around pace.

The biggest beneficiary of nations with more than 10 medals is North Korea whose new events account for 43.8% of their medal total. In their defense, the weightlifting medals are considered new events since the weight classes have changed, if we exclude those their share drops to 25%. After that nations benefiting the most are Thailand (38.5%), Singapore (36.4%), and India (34.2%). For Thailand and Singapore they mostly benefited from the sailing program while for India they benefited from the addition of team events in shooting.

The nations which benefited the least from the new events were Japan (4.8%), Malaysia (5.6%), Hong Kong (7.9%) and Iran (8.0%).
