Sport Events Cancelled due to Coronavirus Outbreak

Recommended Posts

We could see some big stars at olympic men's football tournament if only it isn't cancelled.

No cups in the summer + The european season will end late so that probably means the next one won't start as early as always in August, that will maybe help to get players released by the clubs.

Eh, even if by some miracle the European leagues and CL will finish by July, we just simply won't have a summer break, and the next season will start as usual. Going back to the regular schedule without any delays will be far more important than having a summer break.

But Euro and Copa America are now moved to the summer 2021, meaning the season will have to finish as early as the beginning of June 2021, so they will probably have to start in August. Also, transfer window is very active during July and August, many players will be busy with that.

But the rules of Olympic Football mean that it is mostly an U-23 competition for the men.

Tennis - Roland Garros/French Open has been rescheduled.

https://www.rolandgarros.com/en-us/article/tournament-2020-coronavirus-rescheduled-2a-september-4-october

So this would mean it would start only one week after U.S. Open.

Roland Garros has been postponed to the last week of September.

Dare I say the entire clay season will be scraped soon and quite frankly so will the grass season IMO.

UEG has cancelled the following events:

  • European Championships in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics – Paris (FRA) – 30 April to 3 May 2020
  • European Championships in Trampoline, Tumbling and Double Mini-Trampoline – Gothenburg (SWE) – 7 to 10 May 2020
  • European Championships in Rhythmic Gymnastics – Kyiv (UKR) – 21 to 24 May 2020
  • European Championships in Men’s Artistic Gymnastics – Baku (AZE) – 27 to 31 May 2020

UEG have contacted FIG to find a solution as many of the events work as Olympic qualification events.

    • You guys know how does it work if one or two Olympic Quotas need to be decided by teams both defeated in the QF or in the SF?
    • I stand with Ukraine of course, and it’s really horrible hearing about all the things going on with the war, Belarus (and Russia) should definitely be banned from competing because of it, and at the very least certainly not competing under their own flag but… if you’re going to do that for those two surely other countries should be punished as well, I can think of a few that have definitely done things along the same line?
    • The invasion towards Kyiv was started in 2022 from the territory of belarus. Belarussian infrrustructrure is beeing used for drone attacks on Ukraine. Belarus is involved in illegal transfers of stolen Ukrainian children from the occupied territories.
    • I think they can find at least one more venue in the United States.    LA has one venue because that is all they need for a 6-team tournament.
    • So good to finally get a  medal.    C4 here showed absolutely 0% of the cross country today except on You Tube.
    • American Qualification for 28 olympic seems to be given to SF qualified team in America   A2 vs B1(probably US, who is not related to this qualification process) .. A2 is difficult to be in SF A1 vs B2 seems likely to be Puerto Rico vs Mexico . So the winner would go to SF and win the ticekt   Japan vs Venezuela(?) : I think Venezuela also have high chances to win, but the Japan would be >50% in SF.  DR(?) vs Korea : DR could be also the winner (maybe >90%).  This Means that DR and PRorMexico(?) would have the highest chance to be in olympics.

    • Yeah all the new team sports have 6 teams. Squash only will have 16 entries per gender. I think they could've made an exception for baseball though. It's super popular in America. Venue should be packed for a lot of the games, especially for USA and other American nations.    I think it's a miss by the IOC to not have 10-12 teams to ensure that Mexico, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and more American nations have a good chance to get in. Those nations have a large population in LA and would fill the venue.
