Winter Olympic Games Beijing 2022 Qualification Systems

Recommended Posts

  • 2 weeks later...

Rumour has it the cross-country qualifying is going to get a big change. No longer will being under 300 FIS points be enough, but first a nation has to get a quota, which can be earned (apparently) through the World Cups and World Championships (junior, U23 and senior) and only then can a nation send an athlete who is under 300 points. Much like the biathlon system.

Good on one hand, but whether or not I'm happy with it depends on the amount of nations who can qualify through this system. If it's as shitty as in biathlon, that'd suck big time.

You can blame those athletes  who games the system last time

And the time before. I've always said the current FIS points system is terrible and makes it completely impossible to somewhat compare athletes. The IBU points are way better, too bad IBU sucks so bad in publishing them (it's as good as impossible to keep track of the list) whereas FIS is great at that.

Well, bobsleigh didn’t suffer terrible cuts (so thank the powers that be). Skeleton on the hand...

That’s a shame to me. A lot of the “smaller” nations can afford to fund skeleton, and we’ve seen some untraditional nations athletes do well at the games. Losing 18% of athletes is one of most dramatic cuts we’ll see (at least in the short term). I am glad they preserved four-man, but on the other hand, I would have preferred 30 in both the skeleton fields and 25 in the four-man.

Also, quite a big deal to see the regional clause cut. There’s almost no reason for non-traditional nations to even try and qualify under this system. Qualification just to got exponentially harder in most events.

Yeah, lots of cuts as expected. Myself and @Vojthas are recording an “emergency” TWU episode to break these all down in detail. The episode should be out late tonight/early tomorrow.

Great news!! Big countries have a long tradition of sending 20 athletes, and then only letting 13-15 compete. If there ever was a waste of quotas!
